The Godfather's Compensation Survey (2023) - I have updated “The Godfather’s Compensation Survey” for 2023. As we are all painfully aware, salaries skyrocketed the last two years. The survey provides compensation and bonus for CEO down to Director, and by property size. Small (under 1,000 slots), medium (1,000 to 2,000) and large (2,000+). So why is my compensation guide better than all the others? Because I placed over 1,000 executives and interviewed 10,000. Translation: I know how much everyone makes. The good news is that, despite record inflation, I have not raised the price - $5,000 flat fee with a portion donated to Noah’s Animal House and Catholic Charities. For those that buy in, I’m happy to spend time on the phone answering your questions. Email me directly at mwayman2@cox.net.
Godfather Rate for 2023 – My rate for 2023 will be 30%, with a Retainer required for most roles. The Retainer is to ensure my time is used efficiently. We can get more of everything in life…except time. This business supports my family and a dozen charities, so I have to ensure my time is used productively. There is a Recruiter on every corner, and I’m not offended if you want to use someone cheaper. Hey, I love Costco. I have a business membership at Costco. This is not Costco – it’s Nordstroms. Clients pay me for access (7,000+ executives) and experience (I know why everyone got fired). My Dad was right: You get what you pay for in life.
Hiring Update – At the executive level, hiring fell off a cliff in November and December; layoffs have commenced. Names withheld to protect the guilty. How do I know? Because I get the resumes of those affected. High tech is really taking a beating. Ouch. Outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas reported that planned layoffs increased 127% on a monthly basis in November and were up 417% from a year ago.
-
Jobs Report – Payrolls increased 263,000, far above the expectation of 200,000. So again, interest rate hikes have not had much affect. And again, they called it “job growth.” Nope, that is people going back to work or even taking on second jobs to pay for food and gas. The number of open jobs actually declined.
-
Economy - Fed raised rates another half point this week. Rate hikes to date have done little to slow inflation. Yes 7.1% is better than 8.2%, however it’s still way, way too high. This has been going on for an astounding 19 months. Rates will continue to rise in 2023, which does not bode well for the stock market, housing market or discretionary spending. Stock market finally woke up from their “buy, buy, buy” frenzy and figured out rates will continue to rise in 2023. I have always been a fan of tax-free muni bonds. In other news, the government reported that wages outpaced inflation in October. Wages rose 5.1% and inflation was 8.2%. Hmmm…check their math.
-
The Unicorn Search - From an Executive Recruiting perspective, the last two years were exhausting. It’s challenging to find even a single high quality candidate. My advice to clients: Offer above market rate compensation and move quickly to extend job offers…or you won't be hiring anyone good.
Help Wanted: HOT Jobs – NEW jobs are listed first, followed by a few at $200,000+. Full list of career opportunities towards the bottom of the newsletter. If you are currently looking for a new career opportunity, shoot me over a resume to mwayman2@cox.net. I’m still receiving several new searches each week, and always on the hunt for top talent. The Godfather Speaks
Relationships Trump Talent – The best advice for candidates in the casino industry? “Without integrity, nothing else matters.” Second best? “Relationships trump talent.” Many years ago I approached a Casino President about helping with the opening of his new hotel/casino property. Nope! Not only did he not engage me, he didn’t have the professional courtesy to respond to my message. After he was unceremoniously terminated, he sent a resume. Nope! But at least I responded to his email. The best advice I ever received on executive recruiting, “When the economy is good, people dismiss you and don’t return your phone calls. But one the pendulum swings. The economy crumbles, layoffs begin…and your phone lights up like a Christmas tree.” Can you say, “2023?”
Elevate – Next up, my friend ROB JENSEN asked me to be on his podcast. Rob is specializes in high end Las Vegas real estate. He is also a world class rock climber. In this episode we discuss my background, client events, charity and what Las Vegas can expect in 2023.
Faces of Gaming: Mark Wayman (CDC) – And finally, thank you to long-time marketing executive TOM OSIECKI for this interview. He asked great questions, and the interview gives a nice high level summary of my business model. Well done!
Articles
The Two Golden Rules of Executive Recruiting – Although 85%of career opportunities come via your professional network; another 10% come through Executive Recruiters, and they tend to be the best jobs. Here are the two most important rules to remember.
On the Bookshelf
The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck – The subtitle says it all, “How to Stop Spending Time You Don’t Have Doing Things You Don’t Want to Do With People You Don’t Like.” This is a life changing book. The primary lesson is to set boundaries. Here is your trinity: Time, Energy, Money. If you are like me, you get a dozen new requests daily. Events, meetings, phone calls, texts and hundreds of emails. Although I respond to every request, most of those are a simple “no thank you” or “I can’t add value for you.” Don’t let the energy vampires suck you into their vortex! I’m rarely on social media and I have a “no drama” clause for candidates. Read the book and take your life back.
Half Time: Moving from Success to Significance – Some of you may be wondering about the charity aspect of my business. When we sold SRD (counter-terrorism software company funded by the CIA) to IBM in 2004, I took an early retirement. A friend gave me this book that described living a life of service. Be a giver, not a taker. Two weeks later a CEO asked if I could identify some FBI talent. He said, “You are on the Board of Make-A-Wish. If you don’t need the money, donate it to charity.” Eighteen years later we are still doing it!
The Algebra of Happiness – What's the formula for a life well lived? How can you have a meaningful career, not just a lucrative one? Is work/life balance possible? What are the elements of a successful relationship? One of my new favorites!
