A Snapshot in Time by Bob Gates

Isn’t this a fine-looking group of horsemen! From left to right: Murray Duncan, Garylle Stewart, Gary Danelson, and Wayne Stewart (with his back to the camera). Wayne and Garylle, who have both since passed, were brothers of the late Bobby Stewart, winner of six Downs leading jockey titles. This photo was taken on July 10, 2010, when the Stewarts celebrated the memory of Bob at the Tribute to Bobby Stewart Night (Gerry Hart photo).

Take Charge Tom has been made the 8/5 morning line favourite for Saturday's Canadian Derby. (Coady Media)

Take Charge Tom brimming with confidence coming into Canadian Derby. Faces 10 rivals including Manitoba Derby winner Attack.

Take Charge Tom is a horse built for distance, and he will get all he wants Saturday night when he moves to 1 1/4-miles for the first time in the Grade 3, $200,000 Canadian Derby at Century Mile. He'll face 10 tough rivals, a few of which he finished in front of in the Manitoba Derby, including Attack, the subsequent winner of that race after Take Charge Tom was disqualified.

The Canadian Derby is the highlight of a stellar card at Century Mile, which also includes the $100,000 Speed to Spare Championship, the $100,000 Century Casino Oaks, and the $75,000 Northlands Distaff Handicap.

2025 Travers Stakes Cheat Sheet

The marquee race of Saratoga Race Course’s summer meet will be held for the 156th time this Saturday, with more than 40,000 fans expected to be in attendance and a nationwide audience viewing on FOX. The 1 ¼-mile DraftKings Travers Stakes is inarguably the most important race in the 3-year-old male division aside from the Triple Crown series in the spring and summer and is often a crucial test in determining the 3-year-old champion at year’s end.

This year’s Travers, however, has a clear favourite in Sovereignty, who can cement his championship credentials with a victory Saturday at the Spa. And he just might be something very special.

BC Dirt Mile Hopefuls Line Up in Pat O'Brien

Instead of featuring pure sprinters stretching out an additional furlong, the Pat O'Brien (G2) this Saturday at Del Mar now often attracts milers and others whose connections are feeling their way toward which Breeders' Cup race might make the most sense. An additional incentive is that Del Mar is hosting this year's Breeders' Cup Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. That makes this race worth paying attention to.
