The Weather Issue

I’ll never forget driving to Gulfport, MS on August 29, 2005, when everyone else was evacuating. The unknowns were piling up, as we set out to join Truett our VPO who decided to wait out Hurricane Katrina along with other employees and the now famous “Stormchasers” who videotaped the historic 28ft storm surge (later to be recognized in a book) at our Holiday Inn across the street from the ocean. I vividly recall the scene at arrival with cars washed inside the lobby, the framework resembling a new build, and the team ensconced on the second floor of the hotel. We were able to swiftly make due to serve meals to the National Guard and house FEMA 60 days later.

There is no shortage of uncertainty in the headlines from the domestic economy to geopolitical instability today. Budget season is upon us, and our success will be in forecasting, planning, and trusting the processes outlined in the 2023 Business Planning Resources included here. Summer travel demand continues to outweigh inventory in many markets with operators doing more with less. Long before there were smartphones with real-time radar, old-fashioned observations of nature calculated outcomes. Lizz examines year-round advice to navigate the friction points by Making a Difference.

Our July issue is a hub of collaborative information and recognition, we embrace our open culture with your feedback as Andrew has reaffirmed in his message. It’s heating up to the dog days of summer, we can all find ways to cool off just like Fred our furry forecaster. –Wayne West III
