The Venerable Canon Carolyn Bolton: Called to be a Deacon

At all times, your life and teaching are to show Christ’s people that in serving the helpless they are serving Christ himself. (BCP page 543)

For almost 14 years I have had the honor and privilege to serve God’s people alongside a person who fully embodies the call of a deacon in all facets of her life. The Venerable Canon Carolyn Bolton was ordained to the sacred order of deacons in 2005, but the stories I’ve heard regarding her involvement in the Oakland community, her work with the Boys & Girls Club and other organizations lead me to believe that she was living the calling long before the church officially blessed it through ordination.

Sr. Warden's Message

Indira Balkissoon

I have been thinking about the sermon from the Gospel of Matthew 16: 21-28 in which Mauricio focused on our human nature and the statement “Get behind me Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; for you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things...”

Director of Music's Message

Ben Bachmann

October is here and we find ourselves in full swing at St. Paul’s. On Sunday, 1 October we will offer our first Evensong of the season. If you have not attended Evensong in the past, I invite you to consider doing so. It is a beautiful service with readings, prayers, and music for the end of the day. Alan Jones, Dean Emeritus of Grace Cathedral has said “everyone is a high church Episcopalian, they just don’t know it yet..."

November 12 is Giving Celebration Sunday!

Giving FAQs

2023 Narrative Budget

2023 Giving Form

We will carry our giving forms forward and place them at the Altar during both Sunday services on Nov. 12.

Then we will adjourn to the Parish Hall after the 10 am service for a Spaghetti Feed Fund Raiser for the Pantry of Hope, and celebrate our collective gifts to St. Paul's. Fr. Wilson will serve his world-famous sauce!

All proceeds benefit the Pantry of Hope.

As our annual giving campaign gets underway, you have been hearing about the theme, Reflecting God’s Love, and its reminder to us that we are inspired to give as a response to the abundance of love God has given to us. This is not transactional – we do not give in proportion to how we feel we have benefited or suffered – rather we give because of the love we have experienced in the story of our faith.

Over the next six weeks, we will explore scripture and metaphor around the ways we reflect God’s love and how to transform all that goodness into work, service, and joy in a world that needs us.

Please join us for this time of fun activities, discernment and deep listening as our friends give testimony about why they answer God's call to give, and what that giving means to them.

Cottage Dinners Return This Fall!

The Stewardship Committee is working in concert with the Membership & Welcoming Ministry to organize a series of Cottage Dinners for Fall, which should begin in early October. What is a Cottage Dinner? Cottage Dinners are small group gatherings of 6-8 people around a dinner table and are intended to be a fun way to foster friendships and build relationships. We encourage everyone to attend a cottage dinner group! We want to gather because we value fellowship–the sharing of life together. We’d like to schedule the gatherings between Oct. 8 and Nov. 12.

Please reach out to Mirela Stanke at mirela.stanke2022@gmail.com    to learn more or get on the schedule.

Ministry Action Plan Survey is now completed!

Many thanks to everyone who took the time to let us know what you think.

The MAP Committee will take the next few weeks to review the data.

Social Justice: Guns to Gardens

On November 18th , for the third time, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and the Oakland Police

Department will join in sponsoring Guns to Gardens. Guns to Gardens encourages Oakland and other area residents to surrender firearms in exchange for gift cards worth up to $300, plus a garden tool that was hand-forged from a gun surrendered in a prior Guns to Gardens event.

St. Paul’s Social Justice Ministry is devoted to getting the guns out of homes because they

pose such serious risks to children and other members of our community.

1 Peter 3:3-4

Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel— rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.

Environmental Stewardship - Safe Cosmetics for Tweens and Teens

Indira Balkissoon

Environmental Stewardship Chair

My daughter as a teenager, became interested in wearing makeup. As her mom and being concerned about environmental toxins, I wondered if the cosmetics she wore were “safe”.

Of note is the fact that cosmetic products and ingredients are not tested by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before they are sold.
