Message from the Head of School

Dear Goshen families,

I hope you had a wonderful weekend and enjoyed the beautiful weather! My daughter and I took our dog for a walk at Stroud Preserve. The spring peepers were very active and a multitude of birds chirped and sang. Several times, we stopped just to listen to the sounds of spring.

Listening is actually my newest favorite pastime. It isn't always easy. As I shared with the children in Meeting for Worship last week, there are so many times in the day when we are expected to listen. Listening to (and following) the rules, listening during story time, listening to our teachers, friends and parents as they speak. Listening is a skill, and it requires concentration. Yet it can be also be incredibly relaxing.

When Quakers come to worship, they leave the busy world outside and come into the quiet of meeting. They worship in stillness, meditatively listening, waiting for God, for the spirit, for the divine, for something bigger than themselves. They are listening for clarity and direction.

Children are very spiritual little beings, and Quaker meeting is a wonderful opportunity for them to slow down and listen. Even if they aren't moved by the spirit as many grown-ups might be, they are certainly learning to be mindful and present in the moment.

Families are welcome to join us for Meeting, which is held at 10 a.m. in the Grange. Dates for the remainder of the year are:
  • March 27
  • April 10
  • April 25
  • May 8
  • May 14
  • May 20
  • May 30
Have a great week, everyone!
Mimi
