The Great Fifty Days

“Easter is the period of eight Sundays, comprising fifty days, often called as a unit ‘the Great Fifty Days' for the explosive force of the resurrection of the Lord is too vast to be contained within a celebration of one day...Easter is not one closing day at the end of a lengthy period of Lent. Easter is one extended rejoicing in the resurrection that more than exceeds in length the Lenten disciplines. The first day of the season, Easter Day, is the opening of a protracted celebration, even as the resurrection is itself the opening to a vast new reality.”

-Rev. Laurence Hull Stookey (1937-2016)

Professor, Wesley Theological Seminary

Clothing Drive

Our community ministry partner, Program of Hope Homeless Ministry, is collecting new and gently used adult clothing during the month of April. You can place items in the large blue donation bin in Frampton Fellowship Hall. Needs include large sizes in men’s and women’s summer clothing, especially dark pants and white shirts that can be used for interviews. No children’s clothing, please.

In the month of April, Presbyterian Women are collecting donations for Raintree Children and Family Services. Raintree is a social service agency giving hope to abandoned, abused or neglected children through group housing, single family foster care, and developmental disabilities case management. Requested items include towels, large size toiletries, shampoos, allergy free detergents and individual health items. Please place items in the basket by the Chapel entrance on State Street.

CBD Group Studies John Calvin

The CBD (Central Business District) Group meets each Wednesday at 8 a.m. at Bittersweet Confections, 725 Magazine Street for fellowship and discussion. Their current study is on theologian William Stacy Johnson's book John Calvin: Reformer for the 21st Century, in which the author seeks to mine the rich lessons in Calvin and to interpret them for a new generation. All are welcome! Contact Larry Hamric with any questions.

Sunday School Details & Recordings

PHILIPPIANS AND GALATIANS

March 24 - May 19 | Phifer Library

The letters to the Philippian and Galatian congregations illustrate the passion and intensity of Paul's writing. Together these letters provide a compelling portrait of a theologian and social critic of rare power and insight whose legacy continues today to spark heated debate. For the March 24 class recording, click here.

The April 7 class, "Shaping Christian Community around the story of Christ" will be led by Pat Widhalm.

New! DEVOTIONALS FOR A "GOOD ENOUGH" LIFE

April 7 - April 28 | 2nd foor conference room

Throughout this month, we will examine the search for “enoughness” and spiritual reflections on living a “good enough” life. Using devotionals from Kate Bowler and Jessica Richie’s book Good Enough, we will discuss embracing a life of faith, honesty, and interdependence in a world that celebrates endless progress.

New! CALLED AS PARTNERS IN CHRIST'S SERVICE

April 7 - April 28 | Land Building Riverside Room

Our faith is one that is not merely an intellectual or personal spiritual pursuit, but one that encompasses our whole lives and influences the ways in which we interact with others and the world. We’ll explore the theological and scriptural underpinnings of discipleship, mission, ministry, and the Church. We will be discussing current “best practices” of mission and how together we can make the greatest impact on our community.

Easter Totes for Survivors at Eden Centers

Last month, Presbyterian Women collected items and assembled them into Easter totes that were distributed to victims of human trafficking at Eden Centers for Hope & Healing, including seven Eden House residents and nine survivors in the Eden Emergency Center. Thank you to all who contributed!

Good Friday Walking Pilgrimage

On Good Friday morning at 8 a.m., fourteen people from SCAPC gathered outside of St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Church in the Lower Garden District to make a nine-church walk, a traditional spiritual practice for Good Friday. Fellowship and prayer as well as the exhaustion from an almost six-mile walk were all part of the experience to emulate the walk Jesus under took, carrying the cross, to Golgotha.

Flowers on Bloomfield Tomb

Every year on Easter Sunday, the sanctuary flowers are given in memory of Mr. and Mrs. William Bloomfield. In 1930, Mrs. Bloomfield, with a single gift, fully funded the construction of our sanctuary. A plaque in her memory in the narthex reads:

"In loving remembrance of Mrs. Alice Affleck Bloomfield who felt that all she had was a sacred trust to be used for God, she poured out her love, her prayers, her gifts and herself upon this church during her life, and made generous bequests to maintain the master's work after her death. In this shining example of Christian devotion, she expressed the ruling passion of her heart and fulfilled the wishes of her sainted husband, William B. Bloomfield."

Mayson Buffington, continuing a tradition established by the late Myron Turfitt, then the late John Geiser, brings the flowers to Lakelawn Cemetery each year and places them on the Bloomfields' tomb.

Adorning the Easter Cross

A special thank-you goes out to youth members Nicholas White and Jane Andrews (pictured) for helping to decorate the Easter cross for Sunday's services.

Easter Sunday

On Sunday, 685 people gathered for Easter worship in the Sanctuary, and 187 more viewed via livestream. If you were unable to attend, you can view the 10:30 Easter service, as well as the Good Friday service, on our YouTube channel. Between services, members of the Chancel Choir and brass quintet enjoyed a scrumptious breakfast prepared by Miriam Hollar.
