Victor Sohier plans to utilize his recently acquired diploma in software development and his passion for writing quality software to provide the Canadian health care system with tools to become more energy efficient. He is convinced that the demand for green technology, in health care and elsewhere, will spur innovation to the benefit of the climate and the economy. As the Coalition's new Junior Software Engineer, he will be supporting us on a variety of projects through his software and data processing skills.

Climate change is not just an environmental and economic threat. It’s also a threat to public health—and policy isn’t keeping up. The second report in the Costs of Climate Change series finds that the impacts of climate change on health could cost Canada’s health care system billions of dollars and reduce economic activity by tens of billions of dollars over the coming decades. 

Every year since 2002, Corporate Knights has evaluated Canadian companies with annual revenue of over one billion dollars on a growing number of key performance indicators. This year’s Best 50 Corporate Citizens were evaluated against 24 key performance indicators, including the clean revenue result for each company, which is percentile-ranked against industry peers and weighted at 50% toward the overall score. While the broad range of industries recognized in this list is impressive, it is difficult not to notice the complete absence of health care companies! It is high time that health care companies stepped up their game and made a positive impact.

Each year, nearly eight million tonnes of plastic pollution enter the oceans from all over the world, but for the first time in 27 years, Canadians are witnessing an unusual clutter of masks and other personal protective equipment (PPE) kits washing up along the country’s shorelines.

According to Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup’s annual “Dirty Dozen” 2020 report, some 15,000 volunteers removed over 41,000 kilograms of litter from Canadian coasts and listed finding discarded COVID-19-related supplies among them. The organisation didn’t have a category on its data cards last year to formally track the amount of PPE-related litter but has added one for 2021, given the situation.

Electric Autonomy Canada hosted the fifth panel of a six-part series on Canada’s national EV battery supply chain this week. The focus was on Pack and Vehicle Assembly, and panelists discussed Canada’s next policy moves to build a national EV battery supply chain — and the politics behind them. The discussion was moderated by Emma Jarratt, managing editor of Electric Autonomy Canada. The more aggressive target came with an equal measure of support and trepidation from panelists and audience members. Many applauded the sentiment of a faster commitment to a clean transportation future, but also raised concerns about the fine print of how Canada will get there.

Canada’s federal government is replacing its voluntary target for achieving 100 percent zero-emission new car and light-truck sales with a mandatory requirement and moving up the deadline by five years, to 2035 from 2040. The joint announcement came from Transport minister Omar Alghabra, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Jonathan Wilkinson and Minister of Canadian Heritage Steven Guilbeault. During the press conference Alghabra cited, as a catalyst for the announcement, a recent report from the International Energy Agency that says by 2035 all, new light-duty vehicle sales worldwide need to be electric to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
