CLIMATE CHANGE
To solve the climate crisis, let's have a race – first to net-zero wins
CBC

To solve the climate crisis, let's have a race – first to net-zero wins! As humanity grapples with the environmental challenges of a population expected to grow to 10 billion people by 2050, we need all hands on deck to save the planet. The "great reset" and new "green economy" approaches that seek to phase out our conventional energy options, risk being too little and too late. We need action. Soon.
As this article points out, perhaps a healthy competition might actually work in everyone's favour!
A new guide about electricity in Canada
Earth Day Canada

Due to the extreme temperatures, vast landscapes, and dispersed population in Canada, we use more energy. In fact, Canada’s electricity sector was responsible for 9% of our total GHG emissions in 2018. Luckily, Canada has a huge potential for the generation of renewable electricity and with technological advances, it is becoming increasingly viable! In partnership with Budweiser, Earth Day Canada has created a website with a provincial tool to help you understand your options when making the transition to renewable energy, whether you are a homeowner, organisation, or community.

Report: Canada's Climate Retrofit Mission
Efficiency Canada

Retrofitting buildings at the scale and performance required to confront climate change calls for market re-shaping innovations. Traditional policy tools and current market structures hold back achieving economies of scale and learning. This report outlines a climate retrofit mission for Canada. The authors quantify the retrofit potential and demonstrate the scale required to confront the climate emergency.
TAF congratulates the City of Toronto on passing two landmark low-carbon building policies
TAF

Toronto City Council recently approved the Toronto Green Standard Version 4 to regulate new building performance and the Net Zero Existing Building Strategy to accelerate building retrofits, putting the City on a solid path to a net zero future. The Atmospheric Fund (TAF) congratulates City staff and Council for demonstrating leadership in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area and putting muscle behind its climate goals and climate emergency declaration.
WASTE MANAGEMENT
More recycling, but most trash goes to dump, says report
Toronto Sun

Canadians have done a good job of reducing, reusing and recycling their garbage over the past two decades, although the vast majority of it still ends up in the dump, according to a new study by the Fraser Institute. The amount of municipal, non-hazardous solid waste generated by Canadians — such as food scraps, used packaging, dirty diapers, pet waste, discarded electronics and computers, newsprint, and similar products — increased by 16% to 35.5 million tonnes in 2018, up from 30.7 million tonnes in 2002.
Food waste app Too Good To Go saves leftovers from San Francisco restaurants
SFGATE

Too Good To Go was born in Denmark and quickly spread to France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands in 2016. Co-founder Lucie Basch said they knew the key to getting restaurants to participate would be to make the process as simple as possible, making the app easy to use and not requiring any upfront commitments. Restaurants can ensure their leftover food does not go to the landfill, and at the same time, make some revenue off of it. This app is now available in the US, and perhaps it is only a matter of time until it finds its way to Canada!
Green Team Project

Our recently completed Green Team Project in collaboration with the Canadian Association of Nurses for the Environment (CANE) and University of Alberta graduate student, Joanna Law, created a national picture of Green Teams through an interactive map. Learn more HERE.
ELECTRIC VEHICLES
Electrify Canada to triple charging locations by 2025 as it expands to nine provinces
Electric Autonomy

Electrify Canada announced the addition of 68 charging stations to its Canadian network over the next four and a half years. The brand will operate in more than 100 different locations for a total of 500 chargers across the country. The station locations will continue to be selected strategically in major city centres, along major highways and routes, and close to popular amenities. The new stations include the company’s first deployments in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Additional stations will be added to existing networks in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec.
New Brunswick announces a $5,000 rebate for new EV purchases
Electric Autonomy

New Brunswick drivers looking to transition to an electric vehicle received some welcome news: a provincial purchase rebate that can be applied to new and used EVs registered in the province. The announcement means that every Atlantic Canada province now offers purchase incentives and each initiative is aimed at pushing adoption by leveraging a critical equity element. In addition to the vehicle rebate, consumers will also be eligible for a $750 credit towards installing a Level 2 home charger.
