We want your ZEV success stories
If your hospital or LTC home has adopted zero-emissions vehicle technologies, we want to hear your story. Possibly even profile you and brag about your successes. Please email us at kent@greenhealthcare.ca
Sustainable Transportation
Zero-emission vehicles help fight climate change
Transportation is the second largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Canada. This accounts for a quarter of Canada's total GHG emissions and almost half of those emissions come from cars and light trucks. One way to reduce transportation-related GHG emissions is to get more zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) on the road.

A ZEV is a vehicle that has the potential to produce no tailpipe emissions. They can still have a conventional internal combustion engine, but must also be able to operate without using it. For example, the following vehicles are considered ZEVs:
  • battery-electric
  • plug-in hybrid electric
  • hydrogen fuel cell

Making zero-emission vehicles more affordable
The higher cost of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) can make it more difficult to adopt this clean technology. The Government of Canada's iZEV program and new tax write-offs for businesses will help make it more affordable.

Purchase and Lease Incentives
Click HERE to learn more about point of sale incentive for consumers who buy or lease an  eligible ZEV .

There are two levels of incentive:
  • Battery-electric, hydrogen fuel cell, and longer range plug-in hybrid vehicles are eligible for an incentive of $5,000
  • Shorter range plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are eligible for an incentive of $2,500

To be eligible for the Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles program, you have to purchase or lease:
  • a vehicle with six seats or fewer, where the base model (trim) Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) is less than $45,000;
  • higher priced versions (trims) of these vehicles, up to a maximum Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $55,000, will also be eligible for purchase incentives;
Or
  • a vehicle with seven seats or greater, where the base model Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) is less than $55,000;
  • higher priced versions (trims) of these vehicles, up to a maximum Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $60,000, will also be eligible for purchase incentives;

You will still be eligible for the incentive even if delivery, freight and other fees, such as vehicle colour and add-on accessories, push the actual purchase price over these set limits.

For more information on the tax write-off for these vehicles, businesses and self-employed individuals may contact the Canada Revenue Agency at 1-800-959-5525.

Leadership
Hospitals and the Climate Emergency
Do you remember the TV medical drama ‘ER’ that ran for 15 seasons starting in the mid-90s? It was a great show and featured the remarkable skills and intelligence of hospital staff, dealing with the kinds of things that hospitals do best – compassionately handle life-threatening emergencies. Today, hospitals are faced with a different kind of emergency that is perhaps more challenging than anything that has previously come through their doors – the climate emergency. Read Neil Ritchie's take on the topic HERE .
Deadline Reminder...
The Green Hospital Scorecard (GHS) program is in it's seventh year and we remind all hospitals the deadline for participation is March 30th, 2020.

The Scorecard provides meaningful measures of hospital operations, management, and policy adoption in the energy and environment sphere. It benchmarks environmental performance for hospitals alongside de-identified peer data and is an excellent way for hospitals to demonstrate commitment to environmental sustainability.

This year, data is being collected for January to December 2018 on environmental performance in 10 categories: Energy, Water, Waste, Pollution Prevention, and Corporate Leadership, along with the addition of Transportation, Food, Climate Change and Energy Behaviour.

Benefits of participating
The GHS supports hospitals by:
  • Providing your facility a personalized Scorecard, which is an annual report to assess and communicate your performance relative to your peers. A sample scorecard can be viewed here.
  • Offering the opportunity to be individually recognized through annual Gold, Silver and Bronze-level achievements.
  • Encouraging excellence in environmental performance by honouring select participating organisations with annual Green Health Awards. Click here to review the recent recipients.

All submissions are confidential. Learn more at FAQ , or email dan@greenhealthcare.ca .

Participation in the GHS for hospitals is free . To help cover program delivery costs we encourage all participants to become members of the Coalition. Information on becoming a member with the Coalition can be found here or contact dan@greenhealthcare.ca .

Procurement
Circular Solutions in Health Care Plastics
Health care accounts for approximately half of public spending in the EU - 14% of annual EU GDP in total. Sustainable procurement is a strategic opportunity for public authorities and purchasers for the health care sector to leverage their purchasing power to achieve sustainable development and climate objectives. With over 15,000 hospitals in the EU, the European health care sector can play a significant role in influencing market supply and demand, and lead the transition to safer, innovative, and more sustainable products and services in health care. See page 10 of full report HERE.
Organ Donation - The Ultimate Recycling
Have you registered as an organ donor?
Provinces and territories across Canada operate life-saving organ donation programs and they need your help.

  • Today, there are more than 1,600 men, women and children in Ontario waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.
  • Every 3 days, someone in Ontario dies waiting for a transplant because there aren’t enough organs to meet the need.
  • You are 5 times more likely to need an organ than to donate one.
  • 90% of Ontarians believe that organ and tissue donation is a good thing, yet only 34% have formally registered to become one.
  • Everyone has the potential to be an organ and tissue donor.
  • One organ donor can save up to 8 lives and enhance as many as 75 lives through tissue donation.

Contact your local organ donation agency and speak to your family about your wishes. You have the power to save and transform lives.
Select your province from the Government of Canada list to register and donate:
Canadian Transplant Association
