Learning to treat the climate emergency together: Social tipping interventions by the health community

The Lancet

Accelerating the decarbonisation of local and national economies is a profound public health imperative. As trusted voices within communities around the world, health professionals and health organisations have enormous potential to influence the social and policy landscape in support of decarbonisation.

Researchers identify practical, learning-by-doing approaches and networks to implement this strategic framework. Collectively, the actions of health-care workers can shift practice, finance, and power in ways that can transform the public narrative and influence investment, activate socioeconomic tipping points, and catalyse the rapid decarbonisation needed to protect health and health systems.

AR6 Synthesis Report: Climate change 2023

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

There are multiple, feasible and effective options to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to human-caused climate change, and they are available now, said scientists in the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report released on March 20th, 2023.

The report, approved during a week-long session in Interlaken, brings in to sharp focus the losses and damages we are already experiencing and will continue into the future, hitting the most vulnerable people and ecosystems especially hard. Taking the right action now could result in the transformational change essential for a sustainable, equitable world.

HEALTH

Ecopsychology: How immersion in nature benefits your health

Yale Environment360

In a study of 20,000 people, a team led by Mathew White of the European Centre for Environment & Human Health at the University of Exeter, found that people who spent two hours a week in green spaces — local parks or other natural environments, either all at once or spaced over several visits — were substantially more likely to report good health and psychological well-being than those who don’t.

Two hours was a hard boundary: The study, published last June, showed there were no benefits for people who didn’t meet that threshold. The effects were robust, cutting across different occupations, ethnic groups, people from rich and poor areas, and people with chronic illnesses and disabilities.

ELECTRIC VEHICLES

Will Canada follow U.S. lead with new federal performance and reliability standards for EV chargers?

Electric Autonomy

Last month, the Biden Administration in the U.S. set a high bar for EV charging network operators and site managers when it unveiled a new set of performance and reliability standards for EV chargers they need to meet to qualify for federal funding for new electric vehicle charger installations.

Many of those chargers will get funding through two new programs: the US$5-billion National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program (NEVI) or the US$2.5-billion Charging and Fueling Infrastructure (CFI) Discretionary Grant Program, which opened for applications this week.
