Climate damages are inflating the costs of living for every Canadian
Canadian Climate Institute
As an early and seemingly relentless wildfire season endangers people and property across the country, and communities rebuild in the wake of devastating spring floods in Quebec and B.C., Canadians are confronting the harsh realities of how climate change is reshaping our day to day lives.
Not only is climate change making these and other weather-related disasters more frequent and severe across Canada—it’s also making life less affordable. This is as true in downtown Toronto as it is for those living in disaster-prone areas.

Federal data forecasts grim wildfire season this summer
CBC News
Government data shows 413 fires spanning multiple provinces and the North were burning as of Sunday afternoon, leaving about 26,206 people under evacuation orders in British Columbia, Alberta, Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan, Quebec and Nova Scotia.
More than half of those active fires are considered out of control, said Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair. Mike Norton, director general of the Northern Forestry Centre at the Department of Natural Resources, told reporters Monday morning that seeing so many fires across the country at this time of year is not normal.

Canada has a data gap in tracking wildfire risk for vulnerable communities
The Globe and Mail
This wildfire season, perhaps more than in recent memory, is showcasing something else: Just how close to the woods we’ve built our communities.
It’s all about the wildland-urban interface (WUI).
The WUI encompasses areas where homes and other structures meet, or are interspersed with, forests and grasslands. It’s estimated that more than 12 per cent of Canadians live within it. While the majority of today’s wildfires don’t burn buildings, they are expected to become more frequent and intense in a warming climate.
And Canada has a problem. We don’t have a clear picture of where Canada’s WUI is expanding.

Doctors demand ban on fossil fuel ads to save lives
Canadas National Observer
It is the ultimate irony that as Canada celebrated Clean Air Day on June 7, the country was experiencing the worst air quality in the world.
Health-care providers are on the front lines of such climate-fuelled disasters, treating patients suffering from smoke inhalation, anxiety and the hazardous effects of air pollution from burning fossil fuels, which kill 8.7 million people annually.
The devastating wildfires and other climate disasters are a stark reminder of the urgent need for action to address the root cause of the problem.
This is why a group of practising physicians in Canada launched an e-petition to the House of Commons calling on the federal government to take action and ban the advertising and sponsorship of these dangerous products.

How HVAC systems affect indoor air quality and patient experience
Healthcare Facilities Today
| |
HVAC plays a core role in health care facilities by heating and cooling the air within them. However, these systems play a part in other aspects of health care facilities too. These aspects are subtler than air temperature, though they are still key to a positive experience.
In this manufacturer roundtable, Healthcare Facilities Today speaks with HVAC manufacturers on the roles HVAC systems play in both indoor air quality and the patient experience.
