Community question: Fossil fuel divestment by health care organisations | |
The Coalition is interested in whether your hospital's foundation has made a divestment from fossil fuel investments. Pension plans are divesting. Universities are divesting. Is YOUR hospital divesting?
We are also interested in hearing your thoughts on the topic fossil fuel divestment by health care organisations AND and if you are aware of any health organisations that have already done so.
Submit your comments HERE.
Thank you!

Micro-Mobility Fact Sheet #1:
A Brief History of the E-Bike
As part of the Coalition's latest project to increase public and industry awareness, knowledge and confidence in zero-emission vehicles (ZEV), particularly battery-powered micro-mobility (BPMM) solutions, we are exicited to release our first fact sheet on the the history of electric bikes (e-bikes).
The history of the electric bicycle (e-bike) is surprisingly long and complex, and can't be discussed in a purely Canadian context. The history of the e-bike in particular covers two distinct surges in popularity, the first at the beginning of the 20th century and the second in the second decade of the 21st century.
To learn more about the history of e-bike's read our first fact sheet, the development of which would not have been possible without Dumaresq de Pencier and the Canadian Automotive Museum.

Food bank in Sherbrooke, Que., uses electric bike for eco-friendly deliveries
CBC News
When Laurence Mailhiot heard Moisson Estrie, a food-relief organisation in Sherbrooke, Que., was going to try delivering food baskets with electric power-assisted bikes, she decided to volunteer.
Christian Bibeau, Moisson Estrie's director general, said the organisation had already been making deliveries, but they were done using gasoline-powered cars.
"What we aimed to do, while still respecting our mission of providing food, was to continue doing so but with a focus on reducing our ecological footprint," he told Radio-Canada.

BC Transit starts its journey to zero-emission buses in Victoria
Electric Autonomy
Anchored into the pavement against a high concrete retaining wall in central Victoria, with traffic buzzing along an elevated section of Douglas St. several metres above, is a row of 10 EV charging stations.
The chargers represent years of work by BC Transit, the provincial crown corporation that coordinates public transit in B.C. outside Greater Vancouver.
They — and the 10 Proterra battery-electric buses slated to use them when they are delivered this fall — are also the first tangible representations of the transit body’s fleet electrification efforts and, perhaps, the future of public transit in the province.

Building senior care facilities for harsh temperatures
Healthcare Facilities Today
Summer is a season of warmth, though sometimes that warmth can become sweltering heat. That heat can be especially dangerous for vulnerable populations, such as senior citizens.
Excessive heat and elders do not mix well, since it can lead to serious conditions like heat stroke. Senior care facilities must plan for extreme temperatures and heat waves now as they are more common.
Most of that planning begins with the facility itself, as how it is built can be a determining factor in how well it shelters its residents from severe heat. While some may think that building their facility to code is enough, it can go well beyond those minimum requirements.

Exploring circular strategies to extend the life of existing buildings
CSA Group
The building sector contributes significantly to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Reducing GHG emissions (also referred to as carbon emissions) from this sector is critical for Canada to achieve its climate targets.
In recent years, many real estate and asset management organisations have been setting near- and net-zero carbon ambitions.
However, many will be challenged to meet these targets without significant decarbonization of their existing buildings. For many commercial buildings, there will need to be a decision between demolishing and rebuilding them, versus performing deep carbon retrofits.
