COALITION SPOTLIGHT

New Guidebook -

Environmental Stewardship in Pediatric Rehabilitation

The Coalition and PEACH Health Ontario are excited to share our latest guidebook for pediatric rehabilitation!

This new resource highlights practical ways to reduce waste, support sustainable care, and advance climate-conscious health care practices across pediatric rehabilitation settings.

This guide was developed under the Preparing Canada’s Health Care Buildings for Net-Zero project, made possible with investment from the Government of Canada’s Low Carbon Economy Implementation Readiness Fund.

Invitation to Participate - Have you completed a low-carbon energy roadmap?

The Coalition is inviting hospitals, health organisations, and consultants that have completed, or are well underway with, a low carbon energy roadmap or similar planning process to participate in a short lessons-learned process.

Participants will help inform an emerging National Low Carbon Energy Roadmap Guide and Toolkit, which may include practical guidance, examples, templates, maturity assessment tools, and peer learning opportunities.

Interested in participating in the first round of knowledge-gathering? Please complete the short form linked below.

New Implementation Resources - Purchased Goods and Services

As part of the Decarbonization in Action project, we've released two new resources to help hospitals measure and reduce emissions from purchased goods and services.

The Primer on Scope 3 Category 1: Purchased Goods and Services provides practical guidance on understanding, measuring, and tracking value chain emissions. We've also published a free collection of emission factors tailored to health care spending categories to help organisations identify supply chain emission hotspots.

These resources were developed as part of the Decarbonization in Action pilot project - a collaboration between CCGHC and MaRS Discovery District. CCGHC is excited to grow this project, with continued generous support from the Peter Gilgan Foundation.

UPCOMING OPPORTUNITIES

Hospital Designation Community of Practice

Choosing Wisely Canada is developing a community of practice to support hospitals who are interested in becoming a Choosing Wisely Canada hospital. This group will meet quarterly and provide a forum for representatives from hospitals to come together to discuss their Choosing Wisely Canada quality improvement work, learn what others are working on and ask questions about the designation program and process.

Submit your Manuscript - New Frontiers in Medicine

Until September 20, 2026, Frontiers in Medicine is welcoming submissions to a new research collection titled: “Educational Innovations for Sustainability and Climate Resilience in Healthcare.”

This Research Topic aims to investigate innovative educational approaches and strategies for embedding planetary health literacy and sustainability in health professions education.

ENERGY STAR Certification for Buildings Program

Natural Resources Canada certifies Canadian buildings whose energy performance is amongst the top 25 percentile of similar buildings nationwide.

To qualify for ENERGY STAR certification, buildings earn a 1-100 ENERGY STAR score of at least 75 and have a Professional Engineer or Registered Architect verify the application.

This is where Professional Engineers can make a difference. By verifying ENERGY STAR certification applications, Professional Engineers can help building owners save money and energy.

Making It Happen: Deprescribing Education Program

Created by College of Pharmacy, Faculty of Health, Dalhousie University's Optimizing Therapy Through Collaboration (OPTx) team in collaboration with clinicians, students, patients, and our Network, this FREE online program provides evidence-informed, practical education on deprescribing.

With 2–3 hours of asynchronous learning, participants will dive into each step of the deprescribing process through patient cases, interactive activities, self-reflection exercises, practical tools, and insights from deprescribing champions.

CLIMATE ACTION

Climate Health System Alliance: Exploring Practical Solutions in a Changing Climate

The University of Calgary has launched the Climate Health System Alliance to help health systems address the growing impacts of climate change while reducing their own carbon footprint.

Bringing together health-care leaders, researchers, policymakers, industry, and communities, the Alliance focuses on practical solutions to strengthen climate resilience, cut emissions, and build leadership capacity, with an emphasis on turning evidence into real-world action and ensuring equitable outcomes.

SUSTAINABLE PHARMACY

Inhaler Users’ Perceptions of Climate Change and Inhaler Carbon Footprints: Insights from a Canadian Survey

BMJ Journals

People with lung diseases are especially vulnerable to climate change, yet many are unaware of the environmental impact of metered-dose inhalers (MDIs).

A national survey found that once informed, most inhaler users were willing to switch to lower-carbon alternatives and participate in recycling programs.

The findings highlight the importance of patient education and shared decision-making in reducing health care emissions while maintaining effective respiratory care.

WHO Consultation Builds Momentum for Coordinated Action on Pharmaceutical Decarbonization

World Health Organization

More than 100 global stakeholders convened to explore how regulatory systems can accelerate pharmaceutical decarbonization. The consultation emphasized harmonized standards, greener manufacturing, sustainable procurement, and cross-sector collaboration.

Insights from the meeting will inform WHO's forthcoming Greener Pharmaceuticals' Regulatory Highway White Paper, providing a framework for reducing the pharmaceutical sector's carbon footprint..

FACILITIES

32 LTC Homes Meeting Target for Antipsychotic Use

32 long-term care homes across Canada have been certified by the Appropriate Use Coalition for meeting the national target for appropriate use of antipsychotic medications.

These homes are among the leaders in Canada for employing non-pharmacological approaches to improve residents’ wellbeing and safety. The certified homes span multiple provinces, comprise non-profit and for-profit providers, and operate facilities both small and large.

What Does Canada’s New National Artificial Intelligence Strategy Mean for Health Care?

Canadian Journal for Nursing Informatics

Canada's new AI for All strategy positions health care as the first priority for AI adoption, with $400 million in targeted investments to improve diagnostics, patient care, health data infrastructure, and system efficiency. While the strategy presents significant opportunities to strengthen health care, it also raises important questions about privacy, equity, environmental impacts, and governance, underscoring the need for responsible, human-centred AI implementation.
