Babysitter or Teacher?: Living Wages, Professional Upgrades Sought For Early Educators
Texas A&M University-San Antonio, along with Pre-K 4 SA, is looking for ways to professionalize the industry by removing barriers for early educators, who historically have been women of color.
Catherine O’Brien, a lecturer in the College of Education and Human Development at TAMU-SA, said many credentials in early childhood education are simply to fulfill requirements for licensing and don’t lead to a professional degree.
As part of its efforts to bolster the profession, the university is planning to construct a 40,000-square-foot education center near its campus in South San Antonio that will showcase what high-quality early childhood education is and fill gaps in the child care deserts across Bexar County. Melissa Jozwiak, an associate professor of early childhood at TAMU-SA, said the university is becoming the “hub for high-quality early childhood education” in San Antonio and the state. Read more.

Where I Live: Texas A&M-SA
Though I knew nothing about San Antonio when we made the move — and had admittedly low expectations — I was open to new experiences. I was only 13 when we moved and graduated high school at the height of the pandemic, so it wasn’t until recently that I really had a chance to explore the city on my own.
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the diversity of the city’s population and all its hidden gems.In 2020, I enrolled at Texas A&M University-San Antonio to pursue an undergraduate degree in psychology, with the goal of later attending medical school to obtain a psychiatric doctoral degree. My favorite class is Health Psychology, taught by Professor Ho Huyhn. He is passionate about the topic, so he teaches in a way that is compatible with all learning types — and he’s absolutely hilarious. Read more.

Katy ISD Athlete Signs with A&M-SA During National Signing Day
Katy ISD student-athletes formally committed to their college or university of choice during National Signing Day on February 1.
Recruitment of high school athletes is mainly a collaboration between high school and college coaches. When coaches get word of a young, stellar athlete, they reach out to that athlete’s high school or club coach. They get more information from the coach and have them set up a phone call with the athlete. Many recruiters visit games or invite students to various camps to see them in action. Students also send video tapings of games that display their talents. Recruitment of high school athletes can begin as early as their freshman yea
