Growler and Points of Pride Rebrand

In an effort to streamline and consolidate our communications and sharing of news, we are creating a rebranded newsletter, the name of which is coming soon! This bi-weekly communication will include events, announcements, and reminders, previously featured in The Growler; student, faculty, and staff highlights, previously featured in Points of Pride; as well as all things news-related for Texas A&M-San Antonio. Student Counseling Center Announces 24/7 Service, Updated Contact Protocols 
 
The preferred method of contact has changed, along with the advent of a 24/7 option for students. Here are the updated contact protocols:

Faculty Ombudsperson at Texas A&M-San Antonio

The Faculty Ombudsperson at Texas A&M-San Antonio is a designated neutral faculty member chosen by the Faculty Senate who works with faculty at A&M-SA to explore and assist them in determining options to help resolve conflicts, problematic issues or concerns related to their employment at A&M-SA and to bring systemic concerns to the attention of A&M-SA for resolution. If yes, then consider joining Jag Guides and participating in Jaguar Days for prospective students, pep rallies, student panels, and more. Jag Guides also give our in-person and group tours for prospective students and their families. 
 
Being a Jag Guide will give you invaluable experience in presentation skills, opportunities to meet area leaders, and leadership participation in various other projects with the public.

Students enrolling in a Firefighter, Law Enforcement, or Emergency Medical Program at an accredited college, university, or vocational-technical school may apply for a new scholarship, Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation Scholarship Program, now through April 7.

¡Lánzate!/Take Off! Higher Education Travel Award Program is offering a new scholarship opportunity for students who traveled at least 200 miles to pursue a higher education. Applications are open until April 29.

Leaning Into The Unknown: Interlinking Religious Faiths

Join the President’s Commission on Equity for Leaning Into The Unknown: Interlinking Religious Faiths, an event organized by the Office of First-Year Experience, on April 5, 1 p.m.-3 p.m., in the Patriot's CASA Ceremony Room. Topics touched upon include the significance of faith-based holidays, practices that take place during that time, and the religious roots of each holiday. The discussion will also cover the similarities between the holidays while highlighting the beauty of the differences. The Deportation Express 
 
Dr. Ethan Blue, senior lecturer in History at the University of Western Australia, will discuss his book, The Deportation Express: A History of America Through Forced Removal (University of California Press, 2021) in a virtual book talk, Wednesday, April 6, at 7 p.m.
 
The book explores the systematic forced removal of immigrants through a network of prison railroad cars under the auspices of the U.S. Immigration Bureau in the early 20th century.

Dr. Blue will be joined by Dr. Bill Bush, A&M San Antonio Professor and Chair of the Department of History, and Associate Professor of History Dr. George Diaz of UT-Rio Grande.

The discussion is co-sponsored by A&M San Antonio's History Department and History Department and Mexican American Studies Program at UT-Rio Grande Valley.
 
The event is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required.
Texas A&M Chancellor's Summit

Join the Texas A&M University 2022 Chancellor's Summit on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion on Friday, April 8, 9pm-5pm. Texas A&M-San Antonio faculty, staff, and students will be among the presenters during this conference. In addition, Department of Educator & Leadership Preparation Assistant Professor Dr. Lawrence Scott will be honored with the 2022 Chancellor's Medallion for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion award. Festival de Cascarones

Join us for the annual Festival de Cascarones, the official finale to Fiesta San Antonio, on Sunday, April 10, 1 p.m. - 8 p.m., on the A&M-San Antonio campus! Free and open to the public, this event will feature live music, food, games, and fun for the whole family - all day long! There will be a Kids Zone for the young ones and the event is pet-friendly (dogs must be leashed).

The event will be headlined by Texas-based singer/songwriter Kevin Fowler.

9th Annual Holocaust & Genocide Remembrance Event

Jeans with a Purpose 

April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and the Hazing Prevention Committee reminds faculty, staff, and students that Wednesday, April 27 is Denim Day. Wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against false and destructive attitudes about sexual assault. 
Save the Date! Thursday, May 26 is Employee Development Day

The theme for the 2022 Employee Development Day (EDD) on Thursday, May 26 is Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and we need YOU! The EDD committee is inviting faculty and staff to facilitate breakout sessions on any topic related to DEI. Breakout sessions are 45 minutes in length and are great ways to take a leadership role in professional development. Jaguar Student Media Earns 40 Awards in Annual Texas Intercollegiate Press Association Awards

Texas A&M University-San Antonio Jaguar Student Media earned a total of 40 awards granted by the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association, the most recognized and competitive collegiate journalism association in Texas. In addition, only in its fourth year, the student magazine, El Espejo Magazine, earned First Place in the State of Texas. Read more about the win in the press release. Alumna and Student Success Staff Member Receives Publication of Work on the Donkey Lady
With a specialization in cryptid studies, Alumna and Tutoring Services Assistant Director Mercedes Torrez ’12 ’15 had her work, Evoking the Shadow Beast: Disability and Chicano Advocacy in San Antonio's Donkey Lady Legend, published in the renowned North American Monsters: A Contemporary Legend Casebook.
Experiential and Service-Learning Coordinator Completes Experiential Education Academy

Experiential and Service-Learning Coordinator Elisa Avila completed the Experiential Education Academy with the National Society for Experiential Education, which will increase the University’s capacity with Experiential Learning programming for students and faculty.

Student Counseling Center/Student Involvement Earn Best Practices Award 

National Association of Student Personnel Administrators’ (NASPA) Campus Safety and Violence Prevention Knowledge Community recently awarded the Best Practices Award to the Student Counseling Center/Student Involvement mental health collaboration this past September for National Suicide Prevention Month. This award recognizes a program or practice that creates safer campuses and learning experiences for students and professionals. For the keynote event, Erika J. Kendrick shared her lived experiences with thoughts of suicide and tangible steps to promote mental wellbeing through her talk, Who Moved My Happy?
