A&M-San Antonio continues to grow at a record pace—the University now serves some 7,700 students. To help accommodate all this growth, there are a number of new projects in the works, including a recreation center and student housing.
As classes get started, here’s a look at how the University has welcomed everyone back to campus, plus details on important resources and events.

First Day of Class with Dr. Ochoa
To kick-off the new academic year, President Ochoa stopped in several classrooms to meet with students and discussed some of the University’s programs and resources. His first stop was Dr. John Smith’s exercise test and prescription class in the Science and Technology Building.

When asked by a student why he chose to pursue a career in higher education, Ochoa explained that it was a powerful way to help make a positive impact in the lives of historically underserved students. “Lifting up the South San Antonio community is very important to me,” he said. “It’s more than just a job.”

There was a lot of excitement and joy as hundreds of students moved into Esparanza Hall, the University’s on-campus student housing development. Braving the summer heat, family members and friends helped cart luggage and bags as students settled into their new University home. President Ochoa and his wife Mari were also there, greeting students and helping them celebrate the special day. View photos.
A critical part of orientation, JagX is designed to welcome all first-year students. The four-day program includes a host of fun and informative activities, during which students get to meet campus leaders and athletes, plan a community service project, compete in interactive games, learn about financial literacy and participate in popular campus traditions.

It was a night of celebration as some 1,000 students, all decked out in red, departed from the Main Quad and walked down the “Miracle Mile” to the “Tower of Hope” at the University’s main entrance, where Dr. Ochoa and others addressed the crowd. Then, with Ochoa and his wife Mari leading the way, everyone walked back to the Main Quad for music, dancing and good times. The Jaguar March is a popular tradition that started in 2016 with A&M-San Antonio’s inaugural freshman class as way to bring new students together. View photos.
