Celebrating National Assisted Living Week

A Message from Our Executive Director

September holds a special place in my heart as we celebrate National Assisted Living Week.

As someone who has spent years helping families navigate senior care, I have learned that choosing assisted living is never simply about finding a place for someone to live. It is about making one of the most emotional decisions a family can face—how do we make sure the person we love is safe, cared for, respected, and still able to enjoy life?

And I know this not only professionally, but personally.

My own family has walked this journey this past year. When the time came for my mom to transition into senior living, I experienced many of the same emotions I see families experience every day—love, worry, uncertainty, guilt, and the difficult realization that sometimes loving someone means admitting that you can no longer (or are unable to) provide everything they need on your own.

This personal experience changed me. It gave an even deeper meaning to the work I do through Golden Lifestyle Partners. I understand much more now that finding the right senior living community isn’t just about care needs, pricing, or amenities. It’s about finding a place where your loved one can feel known, valued, connected, and at home.

I’ve also learned something incredibly important: moving a loved one into assisted living doesn’t mean you’re giving up your role as a daughter, son, spouse, or caregiver. It means your role changes. You get to spend less time worrying about medications, meals, safety, and daily care—and more time simply being their family. Sharing a meal. Going for a walk. Laughing together. Making memories. Being present.

This National Assisted Living Week, I want to recognize the incredible caregivers, nurses, aides, activity professionals, dining teams, administrators, and countless others who make senior living communities special. The work you do matters deeply. You aren’t simply providing care—you are helping create someone’s home.

And to the families who may be struggling with the decision to consider assisted living: you are not failing your loved one by asking for help. Sometimes, the most loving decision we can make is the one that allows our loved one to receive the care and support they deserve—and allows us to simply be their family again.

My own family’s journey has reminded me that this chapter can hold uncertainty, but it can also hold peace, connection, new friendships, laughter, and meaningful moments.

And if your family is standing at that crossroads today, you don’t have to navigate it alone. We would be honored to walk this journey together with you.

Warmly,

Mikelle Rappaport

Ready or Not, Here They Come: Medicare Enrollment Periods

Medicare Open Enrollment starts October 15, and people turning 65 in the next year have their own Initial Enrollment Period. Get ready by reviewing your options.

Fall is finally here, and with it, the time of year when we need to think about Medicare options. Medicare Open, or Annual, Enrollment runs every year from
October 15 to December 7, and changes made during enrollment take effect January 1 of the following year.

What Should You Do Now?

  • Don't wait until October to begin reviewing your options. Take time now to:
  • Review your current Medicare plan and prescription drug coverage.
  • Make a list of medications and confirm they will continue to be covered.
  • Check whether your doctors and preferred healthcare providers remain in-network.
  • Review your annual healthcare expenses and determine whether another plan may better meet your needs.
  • Watch for the Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) from your current plan, which outlines changes in premiums, deductibles, copayments, and benefits for the upcoming year.
  • Gather questions and schedule time with a trusted Medicare professional if you need assistance comparing options.

Reversible or pseudodementia

Not all memory loss or cognitive change is permanent. Before assuming Alzheimer's, make sure your loved one receives a complete medical evaluation, as some underlying causes can be treated. Learn what to watch for and why early diagnosis matters.

Visiting the doctor after a fall

September is National Falls Prevention Awareness Month. After a fall, the doctor should check for any fractures or broken bones. But other reviews and screenings are also needed to get the full picture and prevent a future fall.

A Recent Success Story

A Family We Were Honored to Help

One of the hardest things for a family is realizing they can’t do it all alone.

We recently helped a family find the right long-term care community for their mother while they were also caring for their father at home. They were carrying a lot—making difficult decisions, coordinating care, and trying to be there for both parents.

They didn’t need another list of communities. They needed someone to listen, guide them, and help make a difficult decision feel a little less overwhelming.

We were honored to walk beside them, explore their options, and help them find a place where their mother could receive the care and dignity she deserves.

Sometimes our greatest gift to a family isn’t finding a place—it’s helping them find peace in the decision. 💛
