The mission of Henrico’s Environmental Action Resource Team (H.E.A.R.T.) is to reduce the impact of Henrico County General Government and Henrico Schools on the environment. 

H.E.A.R.T. Youth Council

The HE.A.R.T. Youth Council got to experience local government in action when members attended a Board of Supervisors meeting in December. 

In January, the group toured the Department of Public Utilities' Water Treatment Facility. Students learned how employees make an average of 45 million gallons of clean drinking water per day for residents, businesses and other customers.  

Food Waste Composting Initiative Update

The Henrico Food Waste composting pilot program continues to make a positive impact on the environment. In December, the Springfield Road and Charles City public use areas collected 2,943 pounds of compostable food waste. That means a total of 8,085 pounds were diverted from landfills since the program's launch in November.  

Community Impact Grants Program

The H.E.A.R.T. Community Impact Grants Program is open to nonprofit organizations looking for financial assistance with public-service projects aimed at improving the environment. Awards up to $2,500 are available to help get projects off the ground. Applications are being accepted through March 1. Information and applications can be found online.

Energy Management Dashboard

Did you know that the Henrico County Department of General Services' Division of Sustainability tracks energy use in all county buildings and schools using software called Energy CAP?

Use and cost for energy commodities such as grid electricity, natural gas, solar electricity and propane are imported into the software monthly. See the many details and graphs on the website.
