Henrico’s Environmental Action Resource Team (H.E.A.R.T.) pledges to reduce the impact of Henrico County General Government and Henrico Schools on the environment.

Henrico's Environmental Action Resource Team (H.E.A.R.T.) is made up of representatives from Henrico County government agencies dedicated to pushing forward county efforts to promote sustainability, preserve natural resources, beautify the community and protect the environment. We serve as a think tank for the county’s environmental initiatives and aim to streamline such programs. This committee was established by the Board of Supervisors and the County Manager in December of 2022.

Energy and Resource Conservation

Henrico's closed east end landfill will be transformed into a future sustainable energy resource. Plans include Dominion Power installing 700 solar panels capable of generating four megawatts of energy.

Additionally, there are four solar array projects in progress on other county properties, including Harvie ES, Holman MS, Fairfield Library and Rec and Parks administration building.

Mobility and Active Transportation

Bike Month is quickly approaching and we're collaborating with Bike Ride RVA to plan a cycling event in May. We're currently finalizing the date for this exciting initiative.

In addition, we are collaborating with HCPS to create and install bike racks and lockers outside of county facilities.

Green Space and Recreation

Henrico is considering the potential of community gardens and is in the initial stages of reviewing GPS and GIS data to find suitable land for these gardens. PlanRVA is in the process of submitting the grant application for this initiative.

Henrico has finalized a native plant species landscaping guide for our locality. Available on the H.E.A.R.T. website.

Water Resources

The Lake Hening trash interceptor pilot project is in progress. Floatable trash collectors will capture trash and keep it out of the adjoining streams.

H.E.A.R.T. is researching wildlife-friendly fishing line disposal stations that may be installed at county-owned fishing sites.

The H.E.A.R.T. reforestation project is underway. Close to 40 native species trees were recently planted by H.E.A.R.T. volunteers at Deep Run Park and Dorey Park. This is a continuing collaborative project with Capital Trees and the Virginia Department of Forestry.
