Holiday Spirit at the High School
by Angela Galante
Hicksville High School teachers participated in their school's first holiday door decorating contest this December. Conceived by English teacher Artie Mediate and organized by Director of Student Activities Angela Galante, the contest included entries for over 65 classrooms. Ms. Temps and her Robotics team along with Ms. Hagedorn, Mr. Baio and the Equality Club also did a wonderful "Winter Wonderland" display in the lobby. The winner of the contest was room 323 decorated by Ms. Hurley, Ms. Pirozzi, and Ms. Shtein. The door displayed a quilt held by a 3D reindeer. Each square of the quilt contained a quote submitted by each student stating how they celebrate their holiday and their individual traditions. Next year there will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for each floor and hopefully 100% participation! The holiday spirit could be felt by the faculty, staff, and students throughout the building! We look forward to this tradition continuing for years to come!

Trauma Awareness in Education
Increasingly our students experience exposure to multiple or prolonged traumatic events, such as child abuse, neglect, and exposure to domestic violence. This experience directly affects their social and emotional development and negatively impacts their behavior and academic growth in school. It is becoming more common that educators are faced with the challenges of connecting with and educating students who have endured complex trauma. Often the hurt that is felt by the student is placed on the educator and it can manifest in a variety of ways. This seminar will engage participants in understanding the roots of trauma, its prevalence and causes, the characteristics and associated behaviors, as well as learning how to work with traumatized students in a proactive and positive way.
