Read Across America - Live from the Hicksville High School Library!
Elementary students enjoyed many read-alouds Wednesday, March 2nd, during HCT's Read Across America event. Teachers, administrators and board of education members shared their favorite books with students across the district throughout the day via Google Meet. Launched in 1998 by the National Education Association, Read Across America is the nation’s largest celebration of reading. This year-round program focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships, and reading resources that are about everyone, for everyone. View the entire photo gallery here.

PS I Love You Day at Hicksville Middle School
Hicksville Middle school teachers, staff and students celebrated its first PS I Love You Day, on Friday, February 11th, 2022 by wearing purple. HMS joined more than 200 other schools, community members, and local businesses in the 12th annual event.
PS I Love You day was created to raise awareness of the importance of mental health and to decrease bullying. By educating younger students about mental health, the conversation can be easier to discuss. The goal is that students will recognize when they or others around them need help. We hope to teach students, parents, faculty and staff that mental health is just as important as physical health.
From January 31st through February 11th, students engaged in the Kindness Challenge during advisory period at the Middle School. Some activities included creating friendship chains, writing thank you letters to local heroes, listening to songs that bring joy, performing acts of kindness during the day and participating in the purple wave. Purple “PS I Love You Day” shirts were created and sold to students and staff.
Many advisory groups decorated classroom doors or created bulletin boards with the PS I Love You day theme. In addition, each student signed a purple heart and left a positive note on it. These hearts were collected and have been put up throughout the school.
PS I Love You Day was created in 2011 by co-founders Jamie and Brooke DiPalma, along with the help of West Islip High School Class of 2014, to celebrate the memory of their father, Joseph DiPalma, Jr. and others lost to suicide. The last three words Brooke said to her father were “I love you,” which inspired this day.

Are you interested in tutoring?
|
|
The HCT is updating its tutor referral database. When we receive a call for a tutor, an email will be sent to members on the list who meet the criteria for the request. It is up to the individual teacher to make arrangements as to times, fees and location. We cycle through the teachers on the list to ensure that everyone will have an opportunity to earn extra money. Replies must be made within 48 hours so that we can respond to parents in a timely manner. Once we hear back from you, we will forward the parent's phone number and student information.
If you are interested in being listed in our tutor database or would like to remain in the database, please download and complete the Tutor Referral Form and mail it to the HCT at 535 South Broadway, Suite 212, Hicksville, NY 11801. If you prefer, you can scan the completed form and email it to Hicksville_Teachers@verizon.net.

I taught at Hicksville High School until 1996 - French, German, and Latin. In 2008, I made a film about the incipient stages of aviation in Lithuania and D.P. Immigration. The film received a Remi Platinum Award in the biography- autobiography category at the 42nd WorldFest Houston in 2009. A link is below for those who may wish to view it.
