HCT General Membership Meeting Recap
The HCT General Membership Meeting included a presentation of the proposed amendments to the HCT Constitution. Voting for the proposed amendments will take place in each building on tomorrow, October 29, 2020. Members on leave of absence or those teaching in parochial schools may vote in person at the HCT office between the hours of 9 am and 4:30 pm. Members teaching remotely, have been mailed paper ballots to be returned to the HCT office either in person or through the USPS. A list of proposed amendments can be read on the members only side of the HCT website. Ballots will be counted with results being announced Thursday, November 5th.

Please see changes to the law granting time off to employees for voting on election day this year.
The law now states:
"If an employee has four consecutive hours either between the opening of the polls and the beginning of his or her working shift, or between the end of his or her working shift and the closing of the polls, he or she shall be deemed to have sufficient time outside his or her working hours within which to vote."
Therefore, the law no longer applies to HCT members, and members can no longer take time off to vote as was done last year.

Laurie Haddock (OCR and Fork Lane)
"Laurie is an amazing teacher! OCR was remote on October 20, and Laurie went live with some of our classes. The same great lessons that she gives on a normal school day, she was able to replicate live on Google Meet. The kids were so engaged and happy. They learned while dancing and singing from home. We are so lucky that Mrs. Haddock is our music teacher!" -Suzy Caceres, OCR
Victoria DeSalvo (OCR)
Victoria DeSalvo is a Kindergarten teacher at OCR who worked hard to keep co-teaching even when her co-teacher Lucy Vieco had to teach from home. DeSalvo connected her laptop to the smartboard, logged into a Google Meet, connected speakers and projected Vieco to the class. The students were able to see her on the smart board while DeSalvo greeted the students in person. This was virtual and in person co-teaching! Vieco said, "I am so fortunate to be working with Ms. DeSalvo who does everything she can to embrace co-teaching."

HCT collected a total of $910 during its Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Pink Out event. Thank you for all the financial contributions and t-shirt purchases. Thank you to Christine Anderson for organizing this important event.

The Nassau Regional Office presents New and Early Career Conferences for educators who are brand new to the profession or are in their first five years of employment. These conferences address topics important to new and early career educators.
A series of one-hour online workshops are being offered throughout the year. In addition, NYSUT's Education and Learning Trust will host three seminars. Two of these seminars are requirements for certification. Cambridge Credit Counseling will run a student debt clinic.
We urge new and early career members to take advantage of this excellent opportunity.

The HCT is partnering with the Hicksville Public Library and Legislator Arnie Drucker in a program promoting student literacy. This program also encourages students to remain engaged with their school and community while providing an at-home activity that can be completed at a time that is convenient for them. |

You are invited to record a video of yourself
reading a favorite children's story.
|
|
- Show yourself reading the story or just display the pages as you read.
- Introduce yourself as a teacher or member of the HCT. Your students will love seeing you!
- The book can be hard copy or digital.
- If you speak multiple languages, perhaps reading a story in Spanish, Chinese or Farsi would be fun.
- It is meant to be a way to encourage student literacy.
- It's a way to keep them connected to the school community.
- No book or story is too brief.
- There are lots of creative liberties that can be taken.
Video submissions are due by Friday, Novmeber 20th.
Stories will be posted on Legislator Drucker's Official Facebook page.
Multiple entries are welcomed.
