Calling All Volunteers!

Homecoming is Saturday, October 8th from 10 AM-2 PM at Hicksville High School. Help us give away treats from our lollipop tree and take pictures at our photo wall (both created by our own Cathy Temps and HS students). We will also raffle off a Nintendo Switch to raise money for our scholarship fund (see details below). Stay for an hour or the whole time, the more the merrier! This is a great event that non tenured teachers can spotlight in their portfolio!

FInancial Workshop for Next Generation NYSUT Members
Please join us for an in person Financial Workshop at Fork Lane Elementary School where we'll provide valuable information that can help you in planning for your future. We'll answer your questions and discuss the following topics:

  • The short term and long term importance of having a 403(b) retirement plan
  • NYSTRS Pension Tiers/Options
  • Transferring time/money from other districts or TRSNYC employment
Help us keep you up-to-date on important HCT news and current events. The HCT Connected bi-weekly newsletter, Hicksville employment opportunities and political action items are just a few of the ways we aim to keep members informed.

Let us know if you have had a change or address or cell phone number. If you are not receiving emails or text messages, we may not have your current contact info.

Send us a quick email and we will update our records.
The HCT is updating its tutor referral database. When a request for a tutor is received, we will contact members on the list who meet the criteria. It is up to the individual teacher to make arrangements as to times, fees and location. We cycle through the lists to ensure that everyone will have an opportunity to tutor. Replies must be made within 48 hours so that we can respond to requests in a timely manner. Once we hear back from you, we will forward the parent's phone number and student information.

If you are interested in participating in our tutor referral program or would like to continue tutoring, please complete this short form.

From Denise Yannone (Special Education, various buildings 1974 to 2006): "Hello to my Hicksville friends! My husband Steve and I moved to North Carolina. There is a great need for advocacy for exceptional students here. Together with an incredible group of activists, I am founding President of the New Hanover County Special Education PTA. We are the only SEPTA in North Carolina! We encompass 45 schools and 3000+ students! Even though we just organized in February, we have already made a difference. We spearheaded bringing unified track to all our middle and high schools so track is now accessible with accommodations to EVERY child. Special Education staff and athletic staff are having professional development together to raise awareness and collaborate. We are also working closely with the transportation department to improve efficiency of bus transport for our special education students. As a result, every parent of a student who rides the special education bus received a personal phone call with bus route information at the start of this school year.

I want to give special thanks to Terri LaVelle (may she rest in power), Barbara DeStefano and Maureen Kraemer, and all the fierce advocates and HIcksville SEPTA moms who I worked with many decades ago. They led the way and taught me so much. And as always, much love to my former students, who taught me even more, and to my dedicated colleagues.
