Spotlights

Michelle Schwartz, '17 HS

Hometown: Livingston, NJ

Michelle is a senior who will be completing her internship during the spring semester at the Lab Preschool, working on a yoga curriculum for preschoolers. She is excited to be a part of instilling early mindfulness and wellness skills in children.

Michelle is thrilled for the opportunity to couple her human services course work with her passion for yoga and the future career and community impact possibilities this will foster.

Welcome Tia Barnes, new HDFS faculty member. Tia's expertise is in the use of culturally responsive social emotional learning interventions in schools.

She is currently working on two projects, one focused on examining whether teacher’s cultural and emotional intelligence influence their ability to provide culturally responsive social emotional learning and a second project funded through the William T Grant Foundation that examines social processes in classrooms serving students with emotional and behavioral disabilities.

Alumni Making a Difference

Lauren Biddle '14 HS, was recruited to participate in a two year professional development internship with Career Program for Installation Management, known as CP-29. Lauren is currently working in Fairbanks, Alaska in the Plans, Analysis and Integration Office on the Fort Wainright Army Base. She is honored to be serving and supporting military personnel and their families, who sacrifice so much for our country.

Lauren learned about this opportunity through her work with UD Career Services Center counselors. According to Lauren, "The CP-29 internship is a wonderful program because each intern is exposed to a variety of training and departments." Interns gain competitive GS-11 employment ranking upon successful completion of the program.

Global & Community Connections

Dr. Norma Gaines-Hanks kicked off the 2017 Barbados Study Abroad program

on January 3rd, This year there are 19 students participating.

In addition to experiential based coursework, they will participate in excursions that will further enhance their appreciation for the culture of Barbados.

HDFS Faculty members, Dr. Martha Buell and Dr. Rena Hallam were invited on January 4th to participate in a think tank with the US Department of Health & Human Services, Office of Planning Research & Evaluation Administration, to discuss ways to develop and implement competencies for teachers and caregivers working with infants and toddlers.
