Dear HDFS Community,

Welcome to the Department of Human Development & Family Studies and our new monthly newsletter! Through the newsletter we will keep you informed about all the impactful, exemplary activities the department is engaged in, and how you can participate should you be interested.

As an interdisciplinary field, HDFS is ideally suited to address the grand challenges of our time. We have nationally and internationally renowned faculty engaged in research on at- risk children, poverty, domestic violence, globalization, fatherhood, food insecurity, stigma, the socio-emotional development of children, and many other related topics. HDFS is educating today's global citizens who are committed to improving the human condition. We accomplish this by engaging our undergraduate and graduate students in research, as well as hands on internship experiences and service learning opportunities.

Applied curricular experiences in combination with the faculty’s world-class scholarship make HDFS the model of a future oriented interdisciplinary, field. We conduct translational research that makes a difference in people’s lives, we are out in our local and global communities affecting change, and we educate socially responsible citizens. Please join me in celebrating the immense achievements of each and every individual – student, staff, and faculty in our wonderful department!

Spotlights

Jingci Piao, '16 HS, HDFS MS student Hometown: Dalian, China

Jingci is a student advisor in the HDFS Advisement Center, and credits the Center for helping her navigate her studies as an undergraduate at UD. According to Jingci, who is excited to help students with their course planning, "The advisement center is an academic place that is full of positive energy and enthusiasm".

The Advisement Center is open Mondays-Fridays from 10am to 3pm in 111 Alison Hall West.

We are thrilled to welcome our new Assistant Professor and CEHD Faculty Scholar Valerie Earnshaw.

Her research focuses on understanding and addressing associations between stigma and health inequities across the lifespan.This semester she is teaching Families and Disabilities.

Dr. Earnshaw has been invited to participate in an expert consultation meeting on HIV stigma hosted by the President's Emergency Plan for AID's Relief.

Alumni Making a Difference

Jessica Reedy '16 HS (pictured far right), is putting her education and skills to use in the Philadelphia community. She is currently working with City Year, an Americorps Program. This has given her the opportunity to work in a fourth grade bilingual classroom providing her with real world, direct service experience.

Jessica completed her 400-hour internship during her senior year at the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware, where she continues to devote many hours serving as a Relief Manager. Jessica has also been accepted into University of Maryland’s masters in social work program and will begin the fall of 2017.

Global Connections

This Sep tember, HDFS and CEHD signed a memorandum of understanding with the American Community School in Athens, Greece. As an initial step, we are planning on sending several early childhood teaching candidates to ACS for the spring 2017 semester to conduct their student teaching placements.

This ACS Athens Partnership will involve both students and faculty with internships, research and leadership opportunities in a global context.
