Couchiching Beach swimming advisory lifted Aug. 1

Moose Beach swimming advisory is still in effect

 

For immediate release (Aug. 1, 2019) - The City of Orillia has received notice from the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit that the swimming advisory at Couchiching Beach, located at Couchiching Beach Park, has been lifted. The swimming advisory at Moose Beach remains in effect.

 

A swimming advisory was issued for both Couchiching Beach and Moose Beach by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit on July 30, 2019, due to higher than normal bacteria count.

 

Two of the three swimming areas in Orillia are open for swimming. This includes Couchiching Beach and Portage Bay.

The suite of works in Exquisite to Sublime will provide a glimpse of Melody's development as an artist.   She began her professional artistic journey in textiles. Having grown up watching her grandmother embroider instilled a value of working with her hands.  Her free motion embroidered works are a stage in her seamless transition into painting with oils and acrylics. Her paintings evoke a sense of calm and introspection while simultaneously engaging palpable emotions.

Local artists take up residence in Leacock boathouse

 

With the 25th anniversary of the reconstruction of the historic Leacock Boathouse fast approaching, the Stephen Leacock Museum National Historic Site is proud to welcome local artist Craig Mainprize and guests to its first Artist in Residence Program.

 

Celebrating the spirit of community which helped to bring this cultural and creative touchstone back to Orillia, the week-long residency runs from July 28 to Aug. 5 and will feature workshops by Birdbath Collaboration, Otter Art Club and Craig Mainprize.

 

"We're tremendously excited to partner with the local arts community for a new and exciting way to use our space at the boathouse. The various workshops, offered in a beautiful setting, appeal to artists young and old," said Tom Rose, Collections and Program Supervisor for the Leacock Museum.

 

Stop by to watch Mainprize and his guests at work in the boathouse, or register for one of the workshops detailed below. Each workshop will provide materials, but the facilitators encourage participants to bring their own materials if they have them, especially easels.

 

Monday, July 29 from 2 - 4 p.m.

Led by Otter Art Club (Travis Shilling and Naomi Woodman), this children's workshop gives kids the opportunity to explore their limitless creative side, allowing them to pick from a variety of mediums such as drawing, pen and ink, acrylics, watercolours, oil painting and sculpture.

Thursday, Aug. 1 from 4 - 6 p.m.

Led by The Birdbath Collaboration (artists Tanya Cunnington and Bewabon Shilling), this workshop explores the world of collaborative painting en plein air. Participants are encouraged to work in groups of two as they take turns creating their own collaborative artwork.

Orillia opens cooling centres as heat wave continues

 

For immediate release (July 19, 2019) - Due to extreme temperatures, the City of Orillia is opening three air-conditioned cooling and hydration centres for public use. The City encourages anyone - especially those susceptible to extreme heat - to make use of the centres. The cooling centres will remain open until the heat wave breaks.

 

The following public places have been identified as cooling and hydration centres:

 

 

Splash Pads will also be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the following locations:

 

  Lifeguards are off duty at Couchiching Beach Park due to a swim advisory in effect and swimmers are cautioned to swim at their own risk. Moose Beach remains open and is providing extended lifeguarding supervision from 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The City would like to thank The Water Store for providing a hydration station at the City Centre.

Four local organizations benefit from City of Orillia grants

 

For immediate release (July 25, 2019) - Mayor Steve Clarke presented grants to four local organizations at Orillia City Center as part of the 2019 general grants program on July 25, 2019.

 

"The City of Orillia is proud to continue to support local organizations through the general grants program," said Mayor Steve Clarke. "Orillia is fortunate to have such dedicated volunteers and community groups who contribute to the betterment of the community, giving their time towards worthy causes and events."

"The new banners bring vibrancy to one of Orillia's greatest tourist destinations - our beautiful downtown and waterfront," said Mayor Steve Clarke. "Seeing a unique artistic interpretation of some of Orillia's greatest attributes will instill community pride and inspire visitors to explore all that Orillia has to offer."

 

The artwork was created by Jieun June Kim, a Toronto-based Korean painter and muralist.

 

"It's been an honor to be part of the City of Orillia banner project and I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to design five banners that capture the essence of Orillia," said Kim. "From beautiful nature and bike trails to historical sites, Orillia has many attractions. My design uses bright colors and geometric patterns to emphasize the city's brightness and vibrant character. I hope that my artwork will create a sound dialogue between old and new, and bring more attention to the city."

 

Jieun has exhibited her paintings around the world since 2010. Jieun immigrated to Canada in 2017 and is the co-founder of KJ Bit Collective, a group that creates murals and street art events. In 2018, Jieun was the recipient of the Newcomer and Refugee Artist Mentorship grant from Toronto Arts Council.

 

The project was launched with a call to artists to create five renderings, one for each of the five chosen themes. Prospective artists were tasked with submitting one design sample to the City. The samples were adjudicated by a panel of jurors organized by the Orillia Public Art Committee. There were five artists in total that submitted samples.

 

The five themes being depicted on the waterfront banners are:

 

 

Kim will also be at the Port of Orillia this afternoon painting one of the City's outdoor pianos available this summer for the public to enjoy. All are invited to come by and meet the artist and see for yourself how she brings her unique style to life. #tunein
