Orillia Man Picking Up The Pieces After Lego Theft

"Christopher Bellchambers is a devoted volunteer and helper-about-town who can be counted on to wear two things when he leaves the house: a reflective safety vest and a smile.  However, Bellchambers' typically cheerful demeanour dropped a notch as he recently described the loss of a beloved Lego collection, stolen last summer during an event at Orillia's waterfront."

Exquisite to Sublime

The Lounge Gallery

The suite of works in Exquisite to Sublime will provide a glimpse of Melody's development as an artist.   She began her professional artistic journey in textiles. Having grown up watching her grandmother embroider instilled a value of working with her hands.  Her free motion embroidered works are a stage in her seamless transition into painting with oils and acrylics. Her paintings evoke a sense of calm and introspection while simultaneously engaging palpable emotions.

Opening Reception: July 13, 1-3 PM

The Franklin Carmichael Gallery

An exhibition mash up of a road trip, Champlain's touchdown in Orillia and the Apollo 11 moon landing by artists Gary Blundell and Victoria Ward, in an exploration of place and time.
Victoria spent her summers in Orillia as a child at her family cottage - a place layered with meaning for her.  She watched the Apollo 11 moon landing on a television that her father put on a beach along the shore of Lake Simcoe.
As a child Gary immigrated to Canada from England.  One thing that was a constant during his childhood were the statues of Samuel de Champlain that seemed to be everywhere he and his family traveled; to Quebec City, in Ottawa at Nepean Point, and eventually also in Orillia.
The theme of exploration is therefore very prevalent in Project Voyager. So is place.

Orillia Museum of Art & History: When Raven Became Spider
June 29th-August 16th

Curated by Leena Minifie (Gitxaala)
Organized by Dunlop Art Gallery, Regina Public Library

Saturday, June 29, 2019

Curatorial Talk: 1 PM
Opening Reception: 2-4 PM

The Mulcahy Family Gallery
When Raven Became Spider features work by six contemporary Indigenous artists and storytellers whose work blurs the line between modern oral stories and contemporary pop art. Their work prompts many questions: How does the transformation of Indigenous images and stories into superhero tales change modern dialogue? Have traditional tricksters like Raven and Coyote been forgotten, or have they inserted themselves into these popular and widely-accessible forms? And where are their wise, noble, and stoic counterparts, the Eagle and the Badger? Have they lost the fight, or are they still present, silently and invisibly guiding the actions of our enduring heroes?

- Leena Minifie (Gitxaala), Guest Curator

When Raven Became Spider shows works by Joi T. Arcand (Cree), Sonny Assu (Kwakwa̱ka'wakw), Shaun Beyale (Navajo), Julianne Beaudin-Herney (Cree/Mik'Maq/Métis), Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers (Blackfoot/Sami), and Jeffrey Veregge (S'Klallam).

City Of Orillia: Excitement Builds as Orillia Recreation Center Takes Shape
  News Release

The east wall above the main entrance of the Orillia Recreation Centre, located at 255 West St. S., is the final wall to receive brick veneer. The 132,801 sq. ft. facility is transforming a once vacant brownfield site into a modern, state-of-the-art recreation facility in the core of the city.

Excitement builds as Orillia Recreation Centre takes shape

For immediate release (July 24, 2019) - Construction of the Orillia Recreation Centre at 255 West St. S. continues to progress at full-speed. With 60 to 80 workers on site daily, the new 132,801 sq. ft. facility is transforming a once vacant brownfield site into a modern, state-of-the-art recreation facility in the core of the city.

"Residents have every reason to be excited and eager for the Orillia Recreation Centre to open. We understand the construction is taking longer than expected, but we want to make sure this once-in-a-lifetime project is done right; and it really is shaping up to be an amazing project. We do not want to sacrifice the quality of work for speed and would like to thank the community for its patience," said Mayor Steve Clarke.

The building is closed in, with the exception of a few remaining windows. The east wall above the main entrance is the final wall to receive brick veneer. Landscaping has started throughout the 36-acre Foundry Park site, including a new paved, lit pathway that will connect the site to the Lightfoot Trail System. The City is trackingnumerous construction milestones and anticipates a late fall 2019 opening.

The $55.5 million project is on budget. The City has also been proactively planning for the opening of the Orillia Recreation Centre by gradually phasing in the operating costs of the facility over the past several years. This means there will be no large, single-year tax increase when the facility opens as the operating costs have already been built into the City's budget.

A complete construction update is available in the attached document: "Progress Report: Behind the Scenes of Construction."

"City staff are busy gearing up for the opening of the new Orillia Recreation Centre. This includes recruiting and training lifeguards, developing new recreation programs, consulting with facility user groups, ordering equipment and much more. Excitement is certainly building as we enter into the final stage of this project," said Ray Merkley, Director of Parks, Recreation and Culture.

The City of Orillia is still recruiting lifeguards and swim instructors to work at the Orillia Recreation Centre. The City needs to hire approximately 70 lifeguards and swim instructors for when the facility opens. For more lifeguarding information and training opportunities, visit orillia.ca/lifesaving .

City Of Orillia: Safety Concerns Prompt Front Street Road Closures
Monday July 29th

Map indicating road closures for Phase 1 of the Front Street reconstruction project.

Safety concerns prompt Front Street road closures
Road closures come into effect on Monday, July 29

For immediate release (July 26, 2019) -  Sections of Front Street South will be closed for a period of time starting on Monday, July 29, 2019 to ensure the safety of motorists, pedestrians and workers as this important infrastructure project is completed.
Front Street from King Street to Elgin Street will be closed for approximately seven business days (weather dependent). Once work is complete in that area, the Front Street/Elgin Street intersection will be closed for approximately four business days. Simultaneously, Front Street from Elgin Street to Colborne Street South will be closed for approximately seven business days (weather dependent).  Road closure and detour signage will be in place.
"Worker and public safety has become a concern due to dry, sandy soil conditions, which require trench protection and wider road cuts to protect workers. This has resulted in narrower travel lanes for motorists, which have become a public safety concern," said Wesley Cyr, Manager of Engineering and Transportation.

Although the Front Street reconstruction project intended to maintain a minimum of one lane open throughout construction, public and worker safety is paramount.

The City of Orillia does everything it can to limit the inconvenience of road improvements and we would like to thank residents and businesses for their patience and co-operation throughout the duration of the project. All businesses in the area remain open and accessible during construction.

Work on the first phase of the two-year project to reconstruct Front Street started in May 2019. The work takes place between Colborne Street East to Queen Street East and is being completed by John Bravakis Enterprises Ltd. The project includes full reconstruction of the road, new stormwater and sanitary sewers, sidewalks and landscaping. The existing trunk sanitary sewer is being relocated from the waterfront area to Front Street in order to eliminate design and future development constraints for Centennial Drive and the overall waterfront area.
The first phase of the project is scheduled for completion in fall 2019.

For more information on this project and to sign up for e-mail updates, visit  orillia.ca/frontstreet .

City of Orillia: Orillia Unveils Its New Waterfront Banners
News Release

The City of Orillia has installed 42 banners, highlighting five themes, that celebrate the spirit of Orillia on street side light poles along Mississaga Street East and Centennial Drive.

"The new banners bring vibrancy to one of Orillia's greatest tourist destinations - our beautiful downtown and waterfront," said Mayor Steve Clarke. "Seeing a unique artistic interpretation of some of Orillia's greatest attributes will instill community pride and inspire visitors to explore all that Orillia has to offer."

The artwork was created by Jieun June Kim, a Toronto-based Korean painter and muralist.

"It's been an honor to be part of the City of Orillia banner project and I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to design five banners that capture the essence of Orillia," said Kim. "From beautiful nature and bike trails to historical sites, Orillia has many attractions. My design uses bright colors and geometric patterns to emphasize the city's brightness and vibrant character. I hope that my artwork will create a sound dialogue between old and new, and bring more attention to the city."

Jieun has exhibited her paintings around the world since 2010. Jieun immigrated to Canada in 2017 and is the co-founder of KJ Bit Collective, a group that creates murals and street art events. In 2018, Jieun was the recipient of the Newcomer and Refugee Artist Mentorship grant from Toronto Arts Council.

The project was launched with a call to artists to create five renderings, one for each of the five chosen themes. Prospective artists were tasked with submitting one design sample to the City. The samples were adjudicated by a panel of jurors organized by the Orillia Public Art Committee. There were five artists in total that submitted samples.

The five themes being depicted on the waterfront banners are:

  1. Heritage - Stephen Leacock Museum National Historic Site
  2. Culture - Orillia Opera House
  3. Lifestyle - Downtown Orillia
  4. Recreation - Waterways and Trails
  5. History - Mnjikaning Fish Weirs National Historic Site

Kim will also be at the Port of Orillia this afternoon painting one of the City's outdoor pianos available this summer for the public to enjoy. All are invited to come by and meet the artist and see for yourself how she brings her unique style to life. #tunein

City of Orillia: Seeking Artists To Submit Original Works of Art T0 Be Displayed in The New Orillia Recreation Centre
Submission Deadline August 16th

The City of Orillia is seeking artists to submit original works of art to be displayed in the new Orillia Recreation Centre.

The new Orillia Recreation Centre will feature a free gallery space for artists to display their work. The theme for the gallery's inaugural exhibit is 'From Foundry to Future', which challenges artists to consider the site's transformation from its industrial past to its exciting future as a state-of-the-art sport and recreation facility.

"The site of the new recreation centre has a storied history as a major producer and employer within the City of Orillia. In the 1900s, it produced farming implements, Minnitoys, boating equipment, and even a new metal known as Ductalloy iron," said Mayor Steve Clarke.  "Today, the City has reclaimed the site as a community hub and recreation centre for the benefit of Orillia residents today and for generations to come. Earning Orillia a prestigious Brownie award, the redevelopment of the site is something we can all be very proud of."

Artists looking to be featured in the gallery are invited to interpret the theme, either through new or existing work.

Design considerations:
  • The gallery is an area located within the lobby of the new recreation centre next to the reception desk. It includes a 25' rail system and 10' ceilings suitable for two-dimensional artwork.
  • Artists can interpret the theme through any subject matter that resonates with meaning for the artist provided it is suitable for display in a public space.
  • Collaborations of two or more artists are welcome.
  • Artwork must be original to the artist(s) and correctly wired so it can be affixed to the existing rail and cable system.
  • Larger horizontal and vertical pieces are preferred. Minimum sizing on any side is 24" (with frame).

The competition is open to all artists; however, preference will be given to local/regional artists. Submission requirements are available on our website at orillia.ca/publicart or by contacting the Parks, Recreation and Culture Department at 705-325-4530 or [email protected] .

Deadline:
The deadline for submissions is Aug. 16, 2019.
