The Franklin Carmichael Gallery
An exhibition mash up of a road trip, Champlain's touchdown in Orillia and the Apollo 11 moon landing by artists Gary Blundell and Victoria Ward, in an exploration of place and time.
Victoria spent her summers in Orillia as a child at her family cottage - a place layered with meaning for her. She watched the Apollo 11 moon landing on a television that her father put on a beach along the shore of Lake Simcoe.
As a child Gary immigrated to Canada from England. One thing that was a constant during his childhood were the statues of Samuel de Champlain that seemed to be everywhere he and his family traveled; to Quebec City, in Ottawa at Nepean Point, and eventually also in Orillia.
The theme of exploration is therefore very prevalent in Project Voyager. So is place.

When Raven Became Spider features work by six contemporary Indigenous artists and storytellers whose work blurs the line between modern oral stories and contemporary pop art. Their work prompts many questions: How does the transformation of Indigenous images and stories into superhero tales change modern dialogue? Have traditional tricksters like Raven and Coyote been forgotten, or have they inserted themselves into these popular and widely-accessible forms? And where are their wise, noble, and stoic counterparts, the Eagle and the Badger? Have they lost the fight, or are they still present, silently and invisibly guiding the actions of our enduring heroes?

City of Orillia: Orillia Unveils Its New Waterfront Banners
News Release
The City of Orillia has installed 42 banners, highlighting five themes, that celebrate the spirit of Orillia on street side light poles along Mississaga Street East and Centennial Drive.
"The new banners bring vibrancy to one of Orillia's greatest tourist destinations - our beautiful downtown and waterfront," said Mayor Steve Clarke. "Seeing a unique artistic interpretation of some of Orillia's greatest attributes will instill community pride and inspire visitors to explore all that Orillia has to offer."
The artwork was created by Jieun June Kim, a Toronto-based Korean painter and muralist.
"It's been an honor to be part of the City of Orillia banner project and I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to design five banners that capture the essence of Orillia," said Kim. "From beautiful nature and bike trails to historical sites, Orillia has many attractions. My design uses bright colors and geometric patterns to emphasize the city's brightness and vibrant character. I hope that my artwork will create a sound dialogue between old and new, and bring more attention to the city."
Jieun has exhibited her paintings around the world since 2010. Jieun immigrated to Canada in 2017 and is the co-founder of KJ Bit Collective, a group that creates murals and street art events. In 2018, Jieun was the recipient of the Newcomer and Refugee Artist Mentorship grant from Toronto Arts Council.
The project was launched with a call to artists to create five renderings, one for each of the five chosen themes. Prospective artists were tasked with submitting one design sample to the City. The samples were adjudicated by a panel of jurors organized by the Orillia Public Art Committee. There were five artists in total that submitted samples.
The five themes being depicted on the waterfront banners are:
- Heritage - Stephen Leacock Museum National Historic Site
- Culture - Orillia Opera House
- Lifestyle - Downtown Orillia
- Recreation - Waterways and Trails
- History - Mnjikaning Fish Weirs National Historic Site
Kim will also be at the Port of Orillia this afternoon painting one of the City's outdoor pianos available this summer for the public to enjoy. All are invited to come

City of Orillia: Stay Cool in The Sunshine City
News Release
As we continue to ride this recent heat wave, the City of Orillia would like to share some ways you and your family can stay cool.
The Orillia Fire Department recommends the following tips to stay cool and hydrated during the heat wave:
- Drink plenty of water and fluids to prevent dehydration.
- Avoid strenuous outdoor activity and exercise.
- Take a cool shower or bath.
- If you go out, wear a hat and light, loose-fitting clothing.
- Keep your home cool - close curtains to block direct sunlight and use fans or an air conditioner.
- Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle.
- If you do not have air conditioning, visit local public buildings or shopping malls to cool off.
- Learn to recognize the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

City of Orillia: Seeking Artists To Submit Original Works of Art T0 Be Displayed in The New Orillia Recreation Centre
Submission Deadline August 16th
The City of Orillia is seeking artists to submit original works of art to be displayed in the new Orillia Recreation Centre.
The new Orillia Recreation Centre will feature a free gallery space for artists to display their work. The theme for the gallery's inaugural exhibit is 'From Foundry to Future', which challenges artists to consider the site's transformation from its industrial past to its exciting future as a state-of-the-art sport and recreation facility.
"The site of the new recreation centre has a storied history as a major producer and employer within the City of Orillia. In the 1900s, it produced farming implements, Minnitoys, boating equipment, and even a new metal known as Ductalloy iron," said Mayor Steve Clarke. "Today, the City has reclaimed the site as a community hub and recreation centre for the benefit of Orillia residents today and for generations to come. Earning Orillia a prestigious Brownie award, the redevelopment of the site is something we can all be very proud of."
Artists looking to be featured in the gallery are invited to interpret the theme, either through new or existing work.
Design considerations:
- The gallery is an area located within the lobby of the new recreation centre next to the reception desk. It includes a 25' rail system and 10' ceilings suitable for two-dimensional artwork.
- Artists can interpret the theme through any subject matter that resonates with meaning for the artist provided it is suitable for display in a public space.
- Collaborations of two or more artists are welcome.
- Artwork must be original to the artist(s) and correctly wired so it can be affixed to the existing rail and cable system.
- Larger horizontal and vertical pieces are preferred. Minimum sizing on any side is 24" (with frame).
The competition is open to all artists; however, preference will be given to local/regional artists. Submission requirements are available on our website at
