Orillia Museum of Art & History: Kelli Dove- Eh Ok
March 23rd to May 19th

Saturday, March 23, 2019 to Sunday, May 19, 2019

The Lounge Gallery

Kelli Dove's animal series, painted in oils on paper, is a glimpse of her close encounters with animals as a child in the Kawarthas. Each animal holds a memory and a story. She has reimagined them in a way that suits their personalities. There is some influence from their behaviours and how we, as Canadians, perceive them. Each painting demonstrates Dove's strong technical skills and her influence of pop culture.

Kelli Dove (b. 1977) grew up in Bobcaygeon, Ontario. In 1999, she received a Diploma in Fine Arts from the School of Design and Visual Arts, Georgian College. She had the privilege of studying with Ted Fullerton, John Hartman, Tim Zuck, and Laura Millard. Dove primarily paints portraits, many of which are in collections throughout Canada and the United States as well as in the private residence of the former prime minister of Bermuda.

Orillia Museum of Art & History: The Mariposa Gala
April 27th

We are pleased to announce the return of Andre Derrick to The Mariposa Gala! Andre Derrick is a master at food and wine synergy. He is Vineland Estates Winery's sommelier, certified fromager, prud'homme beer sommelier, accredited whisky ambassador and certified expert in the service & sale of scotch. His lifelong love of learning has propelled him to sip, gulp and nibble at life from many different perspectives and international experiences.

Special thank you to Andre for donating his time and talent. We look forward to seeing you on April 27.

Join us for this year's Mariposa Gala!
2019 is OMAH's 20th anniversary of the amalgamation of the Orillia Historical Society and the Sam Steele Art Gallery. We are proud to present The Mariposa Gala  in support of Orillia Museum of Art & History's children and youth programs. We will be joined again by sommelier and certified fromager Andre Derrick from Vineland Estates Winery . He will choose a selection Vinelands wines and fine Canadian cheeses to complement the culinary creations by some of our local food purveyors. There will also be live entertainment during the event. Transportation options to be provided by Hammond.

With your help, our goal is to expand our community outreach in partnership with local and regional charities by providing transportation, meals and opportunities for children and youth to participate in programming that would otherwise not be available to them. These specialized programs support children's development and youth's portfolio development for admission to post-secondary education.

We are pleased to announce Tony Bianco will be our guest artist for The Mariposa Gala. Tony will be doing an artist talk for the VIP guests and also doing a live painting which will then be auctioned off that night.

Tony Bianco has been expressing himself as a full time artist since the age of twenty. His work displays a love for life, nature, and for communicating emotion visually. Early in his career, Tony began to experiment with plein-air painting that is, working directly from the subject, on location. He embarked upon a study of working from life, in the landscape, throughout all seasons, striving for honesty and clarity in his style.

His work is featured on many Canadian coins produced by the Royal Canadian Mint. Since 1999, when he first designed a 2 dollar coin, he has been creating artwork for the Royal Canadian Mint that embodies Canada's heritage, history and culture. His work has been featured on several 2 dollar coins, twenty five cent coins, Olympic and Pan Am games medals, and numerous commemorative coins. Tony has been honoured to design over 100 coins for the Royal Canadian Mint.

City of Orillia: Provide Feedback on Orillia's Backyard Hen Pilot Project
Ongoing

Orillia's backyard chicken/hen coop pilot project will end on June 5, 2019. The City of Orillia wants to hear your feedback on the pilot project and potential next steps through a short survey available at  orillia.ca/backyardhens .

In May 2017, following much public interest and to foster local food production, Council approved awarding of up to 12 hen coop licenses permitting backyard chickens in Orillia on a two-year trial basis, with certain restrictions including flock size and property area. The purpose of the two-year pilot project was to gather additional data so that Council could decide whether to permit backyard hens on a permanent basis.

"As the City of Orillia backyard hen pilot project winds down, we want to gather feedback from the public regarding the success of the pilot and how you would like the City to proceed," said Mayor Steve Clarke. "This initiative was championed by residents eager to bring backyard hens to Orillia. We now want to connect back with the community to see if that desire remains."

During the pilot project, there have been three licensed backyard coops housing hens in the city. Throughout the pilot, staff conducted both scheduled and random inspections on the existing coops and did not note any major issues or complaints.

Before reporting back to Council Committee regarding next steps, the City is looking for feedback from the general public, but in particular those residents who expressed interest in having backyard hens, but who did not participate in the pilot project, and from residents who have active hen coops in the city.

The online survey is available at  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MNBFHDW You can also forward your comments by email to Ali Chapple, Intermediate Planner, at  [email protected] ,  or to Susan Votour, Planning Coordinator, at  [email protected] , or by mail addressed to "Backyard Hens" care of City Centre, 50 Andrew St. S., Suite 300, Orillia, Ontario L3V 7T5. Deadline for feedback is March 18, 2019 at 4:30 p.m.

Currently, the number of hens in a coop is limited to four hens over the age of four months.  Roosters are prohibited and a property must be at least 500 sq. m. (5,382 sq. ft.) in size to accommodate a hen coop. There are also restrictions regarding the location of the hen coop on a property and a licensing fee of $100 is required. Staff are looking for feedback regarding the current regulations (a full copy of which can be found at  orillia.ca/backyardhens .)

The City of Orillia looks forward to receiving your feedback.

The City of Orillia is a city of 31,000 people in the heart of Ontario's Lake Country on the shores of Lake Couchiching and Lake Simcoe. Visit our website at orillia.ca.
