We extend our deepest sympathy to the family of Dr. Evan Ulrey, who passed away Monday, March 13, 2017, after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Betty Thornton Ulrey; three children, Rebecca Ann Ulrey, Bonnie Barnes (Cary), and Robert Ulrey (Jill); four grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. Graduating from Harding in 1946, Dr. Ulrey returned to his alma mater in 1950 and was named chairman of the department of speech. Through the years, he successfully coached Harding's debate teams in numerous state, regional and national competitions. He served as national president of the debate society and was honored to be placed in their Hall of Fame. He was also named the state's outstanding teacher by the Arkansas Speech Communication Association and won the Distinguished Teacher award at Harding in 1969 and the Outstanding Alumnus award in 1995. Dr. Ulrey retired in 1992. The Ulrey Center for Performing Arts was named in his honor in 2007.

Dr. Ulrey's memorial will be Friday, March 17, at College Church of Christ at 1 p.m. with a reception to follow. A viewing will be held at Roller-Daniel Funeral Home from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 16.
