News & Announcements

Rick Adelman, Lead Volunteer in Greensboro, wins the Governor’s Volunteer Award for Guilford County.

“We are so thrilled that Rick has been awarded the Governor’s Volunteer Award for Guilford County. We truly could not have a volunteer program if it weren’t for Rick and his dedication to Second Harvest and the work that we do. He is selfless in the time and energy that he has given to our mission and we are so lucky to have him!” ~Reedy Mensh

You’re Always Welcome at Our Table

You're invited to a special monthly conversation series with Eric Aft, Second Harvest CEO. Whether you have questions or simply want to learn more about our work, this is a wonderful opportunity to connect and be part of the dialogue.

Our next session is Tuesday, October 28 with two meeting options:

  • In- person at our headquarters in Winston-Salem (3330 Shorefair Drive). Light refreshments will be served.
  • Virtual via Microsoft Teams. (We'll send you a link to join the virtual session in a follow up Email).

Please be sure to RSVP at the button below. You'll also be able to see and sign up for other upcoming sessions.

Are you a handy person? We need your help!

Our staff would greatly appreciate a volunteer to assist with assembling a shelving unit and a wagon on site at our Winston Salem headquarters (3330 Shorefair Drive). If you have an hour or two to spare and feel comfortable working with written directions, tools, and lifting a moderate amount, this could be a good fit for you. This could also be a good opportunity for those who cannot fit one of our longer volunteer opportunities into their schedule, or who may need some extra service hours. We will supply the tools and thank-you snacks! It truly is a meaningful way to support our busy staff behind the scenes so they can focus on their mission work.

If you are interested, please send an email with your name and availability (between 9:00 a.m-5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday) to Collin Jewell at volunteers@secondharvestnwnc.org.

We will be creating a Bloomerang opportunity for future handy person needs around the facility, such as putting furniture together, hanging signs, and setting up for events.

Staff Spotlight: Linda Moody

Linda Moody, one of our fabulous Community Meals Assistants, brings both heart and energy to her work. She says she enjoys “watching the volunteer groups bond while helping their community.”

At Second Harvest, we know that strong staff support makes all the difference in creating a positive, team-building experience for volunteers—and Linda is a wonderful example of that. Volunteers describe her as keeping things “fun” and “interesting,” a reflection of the joy and care she brings to every shift.

While helping others find meaning in our mission, Linda’s own ‘why’ goes back to her girlhood in Alexandria, Virginia, right outside the nation’s capital. Linda used to walk two blocks each day to pick up her grandmother’s Meals on Wheels, since her grandmother could no longer cook for herself. Her grandmother loved the fruit provided and always gave little Linda the milk. Now, as Linda prepares meal for seniors, it has come full circle: “I take pride in what I did for her. She was my heartbeat.”

We are proud of you, too, Linda! Thanks for taking care of our community.

Fun Fact: Linda’s birth certificate reveals that she was born in a taxi on the way to the hospital!

Medically Tailored Meals With Atrium Health

The Community Meals Team is excited to prepare meals for three Medically Tailored Meals pilot programs in partnership with Atrium Health!

This includes:

  • Family meals for discharged pediatric patients
  • Meals for women who are pregnant and experiencing food insecurity
  • Meals for adults who are hypertensive and experiencing food insecurity

Together, these pilot programs support over 100 people and their families. The Community Meals team extends a big thank you to their volunteers and to the Catering Team, whose assistance enables us to reach these goals!

You Make This Possible!

A year ago, Hurricane Helene swept through our area, leaving lasting impacts—homes destroyed, employment interrupted, food supply disrupted—and tragically, lives lost in many heartbreaking cases.

Amidst such overwhelming grief and hardship, Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC, supported by thousands of donors, volunteers, and partners, swiftly responded to provide urgent aid and support our neighbors when they needed it most.

Today, we continue to walk alongside communities on their path to recovery, tirelessly working every day to create a future grounded in resilience and collective well-being.

Thank you for standing with us!

More Ways to Get Involved

WXII Food Drive

We are excited to invite you to join us on Wednesday, October 15, as we partner with WXII for another Food Drive! Our host will be the Food Lion store located at 902 W Cooksey Drive in Thomasville. Having extra hands available to receive donations is always appreciated, but these food drives also present a unique opportunity to engage with our neighbors and hear their stories. If you’re interested in volunteering, send an email to volunteers@secondharvestnwnc.org.

Tell Your Volunteer Story to NPR

While fewer Americans are volunteering now than in the past, the need for volunteers to help in places like soup kitchens or with disaster relief hasn't diminished. At the same time, volunteering has been shown to improve mental health, increase longevity, and broaden civic engagement.

Tell NPR your story about how unpaid, volunteer, or community work has made a difference in your own life.

Ardmore RAH!

The Annual RAH! features a fun run, an untimed 1 mile walk/run, a timed 5K and a 10K through the historic Ardmore Neighborhood of Winston Salem, NC. This race is designed for everyone, from lightening-fast runners and avid athletes to power walkers and first-time participants.

Not a runner? Volunteer! The RAH! could not happen without the help of our volunteers! Click the link below to sign up for one of the many volunteer positions!

Make a Greater Impact with Your Investments

Increase your gift — and save on taxes, too!

Did you know you can make an even greater impact by donating stock directly to Second Harvest Food Bank? Compared with donating by cash, check or credit card, or selling stock and donating the after-tax proceeds, giving appreciated securities may allow you to:

  • Give more – by avoiding capital gains taxes.
  • Save more – by claiming a charitable deduction for the full fair market value (if you itemize in the 2025 tax year).

It’s a win-win: more resources to nourish local families and potential tax savings for you. Getting started is simple. Contact our Philanthropy Team at 336.784.5770 to learn more.

Thank you!

(As always, please consult your financial advisor or tax professional for guidance specific to your unique situation.)
