News & Announcements

Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC will be closed on Monday, January 19 and will not have volunteer opportunities available this day. We will reopen on Tuesday, January 20.

You’re Always Welcome at Our Table

Please join us for our special conversation series led by Second Harvest CEO Eric Aft—just for you! Offering you a deeper understanding of our work, each conversation covers a new topic.

Please note: These sessions are not intended to provide details about how to volunteer with Second Harvest or specific opportunities. For help and information about the basics (general information, how to sign up, etc.), please visit our Volunteer website pages at Bloomerang, reach out to volunteers@secondharvestnwnc.org, or call us at 336.784.5770 for help with the basics (general information, how to sign up, etc.)!

Thank you to everyone who attended our December gathering for an interesting discussion exploring how Second Harvest is strategically planning for the new year and beyond.

January Session:

Join us January 13, from 4:00-5:00 p.m., when Eric will share more information about Second Harvest’s commitment to fresh foods.

Please RSVP here. We meet at our Winston-Salem headquarters (3330 Shorefair Drive); however, if you prefer to tune in virtually, a link will be sent out ahead of the meeting. Light refreshments are provided.

Celebrating YOU!

As we look back on 2025, we are filled with gratitude for every volunteer who showed up for our mission and for one another. Your time, talent, and care help make food-secure communities possible.

We also want to recognize a few volunteers whose exceptional number of service hours reflects an extraordinary level of commitment. Thank you for giving so generously of your time—you inspire us and strengthen our work.

👏 Special shout-out to Rick Adelman, who once again tops the list. Rick’s leadership and dedication are truly unmatched—our volunteer operations in Greensboro quite literally would not function without him.

Volunteer Spotlight: Julian Belton

Julian Belton (he/him) logged the second-most volunteer hours in 2025, and his impact reaches far beyond the numbers.

Julian remembers his first day volunteering with Second Harvest—January 27, 2023—when he began working alongside Steve Jones, Sr. and his son, Steven, Jr. Together, this dedicated trio supports the success of Second Harvest's GRACE by Providence program, our culinary program for adults living with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

GRACE provides a safe, hands-on environment where participants build kitchen skills—whether to gain independence at home, explore job training, or simply enjoy learning something new. Julian describes his role simply: helping wherever he can. In addition to supporting GRACE classes, he works with Steven and other participants to prepare baked goods—including muffins, croissants, and cinnamon rolls—sold as Muffins on a Mission through Providence to help sustain the program.

Julian says he’s had a “great experience from day one.” Through his time at Second Harvest, he’s built meaningful relationships with staff, volunteers, and community partners, and has encouraged others to explore the Food Bank’s services and resources. Meeting people from all walks of life and learning their stories, he says, has had a big impact on his own life. The feeling is mutual.

“Julian is truly an amazing person to work alongside in the GRACE cooking classes. His grace, kindness, and professionalism inspire me every single time. He is a fixture at the Food Bank, and we are blessed to have him here every week.” — Charlie Sellers, Director of Culinary Training

Outside of volunteering, Julian works in a role centered on helping people—an extension of the same values he brings to Second Harvest each week. Julian, thank you for modeling what it truly means to care for everyone in Everyone Deserves to Eat.

Fun Facts:

  • Julian doesn’t have a favorite food—he’s a true foodie and could never choose just one.
  • His goal is to continue expanding his network of resources and connections so he can help as many people as possible.
