Hashtags help new readers—and potential customers—discover your content on social media websites. They organize content into categories, so it’s easier for interested parties to find. And what more could marketers hope for than effortlessly connecting with highly engaged new audiences?

But it’s simply not going to work if you just stick a bunch of random, unrelated hashtags on to your post. One question that we get asked all the time at Mad 4 Marketing is: How do I know which hashtags to use to boost engagement?

We’ll answer that, in brief, here:

  • Search Yourself

The first step is to search for topics relating to your company or the topic you’re writing about. See what content comes up first and explore the hashtags those posts use. From there, choose the more niche hashtags rather than the most board: For example, choose “#emailmarketing” rather than just “#marketing.”

  • Try Tools

Tools like Hashtagify, RiteTag, and TikTok Creative Center help you discover trending hashtags based on real-time data. They show how frequently hashtags are used and how much engagement they’re generating, so you can avoid overly saturated or outdated tags.

  • Refine by Results

Some trial-and-error will help you determine the best recipe for success for your specific brand and content style. Once you’ve identified some great suggestions, try them on your posts for a while to learn which ones induce the highest level of engagement. Drop what doesn’t work and focus on the best-performing hashtags—eventually, you’ll have a custom list of what works best for you.
