The Bishop’s Bible Study Beginning December 2:
The Gospel According to Mark
Bishop Bob will again be offering his weekly online reflection on a book of the Bible beginning on the first Wednesday in Advent, December 2, 2020. Over the following weeks, he will walk through the Gospel according to Mark. These twenty-minute reflections can be part of individual study and prayer, or they can be used as part of a small group study (perhaps for a Bishop’s Committee/Vestry as a shared study).
As in the past, the Bishop recommends the Common English Bible (CEB) translation for study and, especially, the CEB Study Bible with Apocrypha if you would like a good study Bible. He will be using the CEB for this study. The publishers of the Common English Bible have an “online sampler advertisement free of charge” HERE. This sampler provides an explanation of how this translation of the Bible was created, a sample article on the authority of Scripture, and the complete Gospel according to Mark! You can take a look at this translation and even have the complete Gospel available for this study (although the Bishop still hopes you get your own copy of the CEB).
As preparation for this time together, Bishop Bob invites everyone (lay and clergy) in the Diocese to read a chapter of Mark out loud everyday from today until December 2. There are only 16 chapters, so if you start right away, you can actually read it through almost twice (although you will need to double up on a few days, but try to get through the Gospel twice). Remember, though written down, Scripture was meant to be read aloud in the community. The Bishop particularly thinks a believer can get much more out of Mark’s Gospel if it is read out loud. Right now, he and Bea are reading a chapter of Mark every night.

Archdeacon Steven Costa's Journey of Salvation
This article is about the Diocese's Archdeacon, the Venerable Steven Costa, whose face is familiar to many in the Diocese. As the Archdeacon, he assists at official services where the Bishop is the Celebrant, including those held on the neighbor islands. On any given Sunday, he can be seen at a service somewhere in the Diocese. As a deacon, he has dedicated his life to serving others in the community, and fills his time volunteering in countless outreach efforts.
But not many know about Steve's remarkable journey to a life of service and prayer. It's a riveting story ─ one that movies are made of ─ filled with drama, crime, guns, drugs, illness, despair, romance, hope, and salvation! It is an inspirational journey and a powerful example of God's grace and love overcoming adversity. Masks, Shields, and Distance Set the Scene for a Focus on the Inner Life
Safety protocols, PPE guidelines and traffic patterns have become the new normal for our students as they adjust to ʻIolani School’s return to campus life. The expectation is that everyone in our ʻohana follows our guidelines to protect not only those of us at school, but everyone on our island as well. So, everyone wears a mask and a shield and practices physical distancing. Large groups only meet outside, and everyone does a health check on an app every morning before coming to school. In St. Alban’s Chapel, these protocols also apply, and mean that we can only seat a small fraction of the number of students we normally do. READ MORE

Parmer led workshops on Kaua'i and O'ahu last August on practices of of evangelism, hospitality, and belonging. But how do we implement these practices during a pandemic? Camp Mokuleʻia Forges Ahead with Optimism in 2021: Mark your calendars and save the dates! |
Despite the uncertainties of life during a pandemic, Camp Mokuleʻia has set its sights on making sure programs will be in place for our children, youth, and families in 2021. They have already had a successful weekend "Stay-Cay" offering, and have announced plans for the following camp dates next summer (tentative of course). Save the dates!
- June 6-11 - Elementary, Middle School, Senior High Camps
- June 14-18 - Day Camp at The Cathedral of St. Andrew, Honolulu
- June 14-18 - Day Camp at Holy Apostles, Hilo
- June 21-25 - Day Camp at Epiphany, Honolulu
- June 21-25 - Day Camp at All Saintsʻ Kapaʻa
- July 5-9 - Day Camp at Good Shepherd
- July 11-13 - Mini Camp, Elementary
- July 15-18 - Family Camp
- July 18-23 - Elementary, Middle School Camps
SCHOLARSHIPS - Camp Mokuleʻia is once again offering scholarship funds in 2021. All congregations are eligible to receive up to $1,000 to help their children and youth attend camp.
SUMMER STAFF - The Campʻs goal next summer is to hire the majority of summer staff locally. If you have college students in your congregation that you think would make good counselors, please provide them with the following link HERE.

Native Hawaiian Clergy in Hawaiʻi’s Episcopal Church |
The Episcopal Church has a long history in Hawaiʻi. King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma were close friends with the British Royal family and were familiar with the Anglican Church in England.
They invited the religion to the islands in 1862, where it became the Hawaiian Reformed Catholic Church, now known as the Episcopal Church. The priests that came here to run the services were not Native Hawaiian. READ MORE

Eucharist at Waterʻs Edge with Halau Waʻa Episcopal
|
This issue's featured service takes us to Oʻahu, where the Dioceseʻs newest church community, Halau Waʻa, held a service at Camp Mokuleʻia on October 25. Along with their faithful followers, they had a number of folks join them that were attending the Campʻs first "Stay-Cay" weekend. Over two dozen souls enjoyed worshiping in a beautiful setting with gorgeous weather! Following the service, the Camp provided yummy lunches in picnic baskets. It went so well that Halau Waʻa has been invited back for the next Stay-Cay weekend this Sunday! If youʻre in the mood for some wonderful music and worship at waterʻs edge, head out there this Sunday at 10:00 AM, or tune in online HERE. Emmanuel's 18th Annual Chocolate Extravaganza
Still time to support our first responders and Family Promise!
|
For the past 17 years, one of the most anticipated and successful annual fundraisers in the Diocese is the Chocolate Extravaganza put on by Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Kailua. COVID-19 nearly forced the cancellation of this year's event which supports Family Promise, but they have forged ahead with a "pandemic" version. Although it will not feature the in-person chocolate feast, they will still celebrate chocolate by giving luscious treats to our first responders on November 21. They are accepting donations for Family Promise, and all donors will be entered in a prize giveaway. For more information and to make a donation, visit their website HERE

On Saturday, November 14, the teens of St. Augustineʻs Episcopal Church will be collecting baby bath products, toys, and books for keiki 0-5 years. This drive through drop-off event is to help the Hawaiʻi Diaper Bank fill their holiday gift bags. Collection will take place in the St. Augustineʻs parking lot at 54-3801 Akoni Pule Hwy. in Kapaʻau,from 4:30-6:00 PM. They will also be accepting donations at their thrift shop and community meal. A Caring Place didn’t start as a feeding ministry. When the upstart nonprofit in Lexington, Kentucky, was founded last year by members of two closely aligned Episcopal and Lutheran congregations, its primary mission was to alleviate feelings of isolation and loneliness among senior citizens in the area.
