Last Sunday After Epiphany

O God, who before the passion of your only begotten Son revealed his glory upon the holy mountain: Grant to us that we, beholding by faith the light of his countenance, may be strengthened to bear our cross, and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE BISHOP'S CORNER

Bishop's Video Message: The Virtues and President Trumps Words & Posts

During these chaotic and divisive times our nation is enduring, Bishop Robert Fitzpatrick shares an important message reminding us of our responsibilities as Christians to recognize in ourselves and others, the Virtues that Scripture tells us to heed. Click HERE or on his image to view the video message now.

For those who missed the Peace & Justice Service that the Bishop led on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Honolulu, you can now watch it in its entirety HERE.

Bishop's Visitation: A Weekend of Grace at St. James'

On January 24 and 25, 2026, Bishop Bob made a Visitation to St. James' Episcopal Church on Hawai'i Island, where he Celebrated their Saturday evening Beach Mass and Sunday service in the church. Their Rector, the Rev. David Stout shared the following in their weekly e-news:

This past weekend was a powerful and grace-filled moment in the life of our parish ʻohana. Our worship was beautiful and prayerful, and Sunday’s 9:30 AM service at St. James’ was especially rich with the presence of Bishop Fitzpatrick among us and the hula offered by our St. Columbaʻs hālau. To gather as one parish, to pray, sing, listen, and break bread together not only in worship but afterwards for our parish luncheon, is no small gift. In a world that so often feels fragmented and hurried, worship re-centers us in what matters most.

One of the most moving parts of Sunday’s service was witnessing members of our community publicly affirm and “confirm” their faith. These were not abstract promises or empty words. They are lived commitments, rooted in baptism, shaped by experience, and offered with humility and courage. Each person stood where they were in life and said, in effect: I choose to follow Jesus. Christian Unity: Annual Ecumenical Taizé Service

The annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is an ecumenical week of worship and education coordinated by the World Council of Churches, of which The Episcopal Church is a founding member. This year's Week of Prayer ran from January 18-25, and the theme was "There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling" (Ephesians 4:4).

During the Week of Prayer, a Taizé prayer service was held on Wednesday, January 21, at the Holy Spirit Parish/Newman Center on the University of Hawai'i Manoa Campus. Religious leaders from around Hawai'i came together including our Bishop (pictured in the red and white chasuble), Bishop Larry Silva from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu, Lutheran Church, and others. Joining the Bishop from our Diocese were the Rev. Ruth Peterson (pictured fifth from left) and the Rev. Frank Condello II (at far right). (Photo contributed by JP Sabbithi)

Why Accurate Communicant Lists Matter More Than Ever

It’s Parochial Report Season!  Each year, every congregation in the Diocese submits its Parochial Report—a document that is far more than a statistical exercise. It is the Church’s official record of who we are, how we are growing or changing, and how faithfully we are stewarding the people entrusted to our care. At the heart of that report is a number that shapes nearly every aspect of our common life: the count of “communicants in good standing.”

The Standing Committee has observed a growing concern: some congregations are carrying communicant lists that have not been reviewed or culled for accuracy. While this may seem like a small administrative oversight, the consequences ripple outward in significant ways.

"...I hope – no, insist (this is something that I rarely have done as your bishop) – that every congregation engage Hōʻimi Pono. To help us – Episcopalians in Hawaiʻi – live in our responsibility to engage God’s mission in Hawai‘i, the Racial Reconciliation Task Force has prepared the Hōʻimi Pono (Seeking Righteousness) curriculum. This curriculum invites us to tell our individual stories within our context of a living host culture and the many cultures of people who now call these Islands home.” ~ Bishop Robert Fitzpatrick (2024 Diocesan Convention Address)

Becoming and Belonging: Forming a Constellation of Leaders

By the Rev. Canon Andrew J. Arakawa, Canon for Ministry Formation

I am grateful to have attended the 2026 Forma Conference, held January 26–29 at St. John’s Cathedral in Denver. Formation leaders from across our wider Church, and from a variety of denominations, gathered around the conference theme, “Becoming and Belonging.” Grounded in 2 Corinthians 3:18, we were invited to reflect on two central questions: Who do I belong to? And who am I becoming?

Although snowstorms on the East Coast prevented him from joining us in person, we were grateful for the technology that allowed our keynote speaker, the Rev. Dr. Patrick B. Reyes, to participate via Zoom. Since reading his book, The Purpose Gap: Empowering Communities of Color to Find Meaning and Thrive, I have been especially drawn to his model of cultivating a constellation of leaders rather than relying on solitary “superstar” leaders. Lent 2026: Gratitude and Reciprocity

Looking for a way to connect with others as a part of your Lenten Discipline this year? Look no further! United Thank Offering (UTO) is offering a 5-session book club on The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World by Robin Wall Kimmerer, author of Braiding Sweetgrass. This is a perfect book to explore during Lent because it can encourage us to think more deeply about gift, reciprocity, and gratitude. We’ll explore this book together and see what we can learn about gratitude as a way to give thanks by word and deed for the gifts given by the world around us. You’re also welcome to attend all 5 sessions or just the ones when you’re available or where a topic interests you. For schedule details and to register, click HERE.

MAUI - Renewal of Ministry, the Rev. Amy Crowe

(Story and photos from the Trinity e-news and Facebook page) Folks at Trinity By-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Kihei, Maui, gathered in joyful celebration on Saturday, January 31, 2026, for the Renewal of Ministry of our new Vicar, the Reverend Amy Crowe. The service was held in our outdoor sanctuary where congregants, friends, and guests came together in a spirit of gratitude and hope to mark this important milestone in the life of our church.

We were honored by the presence of the Right Reverend Robert Fitzpatrick, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Hawai'i, who officiated. Numerous clergy from across the Diocese and beyond also joined in the service, offering their prayers and support as Mother Amy was formally welcomed into her ministry with us. Following the service, all who attended were invited to a catered lunch, providing a wonderful opportunity for fellowship, conversation, and celebration. The day was filled with warmth, community, and thanksgiving, and we look forward with great anticipation to this new chapter of ministry with her.
