O God, because without you we are not able to please you, mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

| | The Bishop has been busy with visitations and visiting clergy. Pictured above and below, his visitation at The Cathedral of St. Andrew on Sunday, August 31, included six baptisms, two reaffirmations and two receptions. The Very Rev. Heather Patton-Graham, Dean of the Cathedral, also performed baptisms during the first service. From the Cathedral's Facebook page: "Always a wonderful celebration when the Bishop is in the Bishop's House! Baptisms, Receptions, Reaffirmations of Baptismal Vows, and the Installation of Nicholas Keone Lee as the Canon Director of Music. Shout-outs to the vergers, acolytes, musicians, readers, altar guild, ushers, and hospitality crew whose ministries make mornings like this beautiful and so full of fellowship and joy!" (Photos from the Cathedral's Facebook page) | | Below, the Bishop spent time with a delegation from the Philippines who were on their way to the Iglesia Filipina Independiente (IFI) Bishop’s Conference in Los Angeles. The Bishop is there now, joining them as they work on relations between the two churches as full communion partners. Pictured on the steps of the Cathedral are the Rev. Cn. 2025 Summer Camp Wrap-up!
By Damian Martin, Co-Program Director & Site Stewardship Director
| | This summer at Camp Mokulē'ia was truly transformative as we gathered under the theme of God’s Mosaic, celebrating the beauty of inclusion and the truth that each of us is an essential piece of God’s creation. It was the largest summer camp we’ve hosted since reinstating our program in 2018, welcoming 275 campers from many churches, Episcopal and otherwise, throughout the Hawaiian islands and the continent. | | Alongside our core programs, we also had the privilege of running two very special sessions—Camp Ho‘omana, a special needs Camp, and Camp Anuenue, a camp designed for children and families affected by cancer. | Our team of 20 counselors and counselors-in-training came from across the United States, forming one of the most cohesive and supportive teams we’ve ever had. Their unity, care, and dedication created a safe, joyful environment where campers could grow, connect, and experience God’s love in life-changing ways. We are deeply grateful for the chaplains who faithfully guided us each week, offering spiritual leadership and encouragement. | | WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE DIOCESE | | Visit the Diocese's Calendar page HERE for Diocesan events & activities. | | |

The ABCs of Faith Formation: Autonomy, Belonging, Competence
By The Rev. Canon Andrew J. Arakawa, Canon for Ministry Formation
| | |
In educational settings, we often think about the “ABCs” of learning: Autonomy, Belonging, and Competence, which are drawn from Self-Determination Theory. The concept helps us develop a framework that supports educational environments that meet the three psychological needs mentioned above.
-
Autonomy refers to the student's need to feel in control of their own learning and to have a sense of agency in making choices.
-
Belonging is about feeling connected, accepted, and valued within the learning community.
-
Competence involves feeling capable of and having the resources to successfully meet learning challenges.
As I think about our lives together as a community of faith and as lifelong learners continually digging deeper as disciples of Christ, I want us to consider the “ABCʻs” of learning within a theological framework. READ FULL ARTICLE

O'AHU: Annual Soldier's Chapel Event Honoring Queen Lili'uokalani by the Rev. Cn. Andrew Arakawa | |
September 2 was Queen Liliʻuokalani’s birthday. Hawaiʻi’s last reigning monarch would be 187 years old. A group from the diocese attended a service organized by Kahu Haʻaheo Guanson and Kahu Kaleo Patterson to commemorate her birthday at The Soldier’s Chapel at Schofield Barracks. Members of the Royal Order of Kamhehameha, other faith leaders, community members, and Garrison Commander Rachel Sullivan and her staff were also in attendance. The Chapel was built in 1913 through a donation of land and resources by the Queen. Can you imagine building a place of worship, a place for peace and reconciliation, for those who invaded your land and took over your nation? It is challenging and inspiring to picture an individual who was able to do so with such grace and forgiveness.
In his reflection that he offered to the gathering, the Venerable Steve Costa, Archdeacon of our Diocese, shared some of the Queen’s wisdom by quoting her words, “It is a razor's edge. It is the width of a blade of pili grass.” After the event, Deacon Steve shared that he wanted all in attendance to deeply consider “the Queen and we, modern Kanaka, trying to walk in both the modern world and the world of our kūpuna.”
Deacon Steve shares the full quote from the Queen:
“I could not turn back the time for political change, but there is still time to save our heritage. You must remember never to cease to act because you fear you may fail. The way to lose any earthly kingdom is to be inflexible, intolerant and prejudicial. Another way is to be too flexible, tolerant of too many wrongs and without judgment at all. It is a razor’s edge. It is the width of a blade of pili grass. To gain the kingdom of heaven is to hear what is not said, to see what cannot be seen, and to know the unknowable – that is Aloha. All things in this world are two; in heaven there is but one.” - Liliʻuokalani 1917.
It was a very special evening. The energy of the Solider’s Chapel embraced all of us with a feeling of aloha – it was beautiful.
(Pictured above, Diocesan representatives included Kahu Kaleo Patterson, Kahu Haaheo Guanson, the Rev. Cn. Andrew Arakawa, (back row) Archdeacon Steve Costa and Mary Carpenter. Read more about this annual event on the St. Stephen's website HERE. Contributed photo)

MAUI: Lights for Lahaina Brings "Heavenly Healing" for a Community Recovering
| |
On the evening of Saturday, September 6, 2025, the town of Lahaina was glowing with lights of hope and healing, and not destruction. A mile-long path was illuminated from Pu'unoa Beach and along Front Street, where thriving businesses and homes once stood. Folks were invited to take part in a Light March carrying lanterns decorated with pictures and messages of hope, while walking the path together in reflection. Put together by Aloha Amplified and Mālama Maui ‘Ohana Foundation, the event offered a number of activities for the community to participate in, along with the Light March.
Kalani Holokai, our Maui Community Relations Coordinator, arranged for 100 lanterns to be distributed to our Maui Episcopal Churches that would become a part of the march. Although the path didn't quite reach the Holy Innocents' site, organizers made sure to light up the property (pictured below) with LED lights and lanterns that were decorated by Maui members. The Diocese of Hawai'i also sponsored the Mālama Lani Stargazing activity.
| |
"[The] gathering was very moving," said the Rev. Amy Crowe, former Vicar of Holy Innocents who recently began serving at Trinity By-the-Sea in Kihei. "One person shared that it helped her be brought out of the shadows."
Crowe has been serving as a chaplain and the Maui Recovery Disaster Spiritual Care Program Coordinator, and is well aware of the struggles and challenges residents are still coping with. She is grateful for this "soulful gathering" and the numerous booths sharing information for disaster relief and mental health services.
"As faith leaders it is vital we continue to share this information with folks as many are struggling deeply with the grief and trauma of the fires," said Crowe in an email to faith leaders and colleagues.
