Message from the Bishop: Hear Their Voices

My dear Siblings in Christ,

Recently, the General Synod of the Church of England adopted a resolution regarding the plight of the Palestinian people and ongoing conflict in Palestine and Israel. The General Synod is something like the General Convention of the Episcopal Church and functions as the primary governing body of the Church of England.

Synod votes to stand in solidarity with Palestinian Christians and ‘hear’ their voices in amended motion

The resolution commits the Church of England to “stand in solidarity” with Palestinian Christians and “hear” their experiences while opposing anti-Semitism and anti-Muslim hatred.

The Synod called members of the Church of England to “hear” the “heartfelt expressions of the lived experience of Palestinian Christians” through the words of four documents:

As your Bishop, I too urge you to read the documents and consider well the reality of Palestinian Christians.

The Joyful Sounds of St. Stephen's

Bishop Bob visited St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Wahiawa, O'ahu, this past Sunday, July 19, 2026, where the littlest in the crowd was baptized. The service was filled with music, celebration, and a "sweet" message that was presented to the Bishop for his retirement. A special Aloha Luncheon followed. Update on Typhoon Bavi: Continue to Pray for Guam and Saipan

Super Typhoon Bavi, that affected the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, Philippines and onward to China in early July, goes down in history as one of the strongest tropical cyclones on record to hit a United States Territory. The Rev. Canon Irene Maliaman of St. John the Divine in Guam shared the following update:

We are overwhelmed by the loving response of the people in the diocese. It seems to me that our joining of the diocese two years ago was a great timing and opportunity as we needed to be part of the larger body of the Church. We feel blessed to be embraced by the prayers and love of people who reached out to us.

While Guam and Saipan suffered from the devastation of the recent two super typhoons, I am encouraged by the resilience and bond of community that I witnessed in the aftermath of the disaster.

[Hardest] hit by Bavi was the tiny island of Rota, home to more or less 1,700 people. We at St. John’s are helping in the donation drive for Rota.

Meet the "Brothers"- Our Convention 58 Chaplains!

Reminder: Make Flight Reservations NOW!

We are delighted to welcome the Franciscan Brothers (all of them!) from the Society of Saint Francis to serve as our Convention Chaplains. Bishop Bob has been their Bishop Protector since 2017, serving as a consultant to the Society and as a liaison between the community and The Episcopal Church. Some of you may recall that Brother Ambrose and Brother Thomas (pictured above left) served as chaplains for Convention 55, providing a wonderful balance of humor and reverence.

As a reminder, we are advising all neighbor island voting clergy and convention delegates to book your flights NOW, especially those planning to arrive on Saturday morning for the Annual Meeting. With the recent cutback in flights on Hawaiian Airlines, in most cases, there is only one flight that will get you to O'ahu in time before check-in closes at 8:30 AM. Remember, late arrivals could cause you to lose your ability to vote! Clergy Conference Theme - Tradition, Transition, and Transfiguration: Living into a Time of Leadership Transition as a Communal and Spiritual Rite of Passage

The theme for this year's Annual Clergy Conference has been announced! Guest speaker, the Rev. Rachel Taber-Hamilton, will be presenting on: "Tradition, Transition, and Transfiguration: Living into a Time of Leadership Transition as a Communal and Spiritual Rite of Passage.

The conference takes place on the Garden Island of Kaua'i, August 24-26, 2026, at the Outrigger Kaua'i Beach Resort & Spa. Although the deadline to book discounted hotel rooms has passed, you may still book rooms through their regular reservation system HERE. Registration for the event remains open! The 2026 summer camp program is winding down, and youth from around the diocese and beyond created wonderful memories of their time at Camp Mokulē'ia. Pictured at the recent Elementary Camp is the Rev. Jenn Latham, who served as camp chaplain, along with Bishop-elect Libby Berman and a couple children from their large contingent of Holy Nativity participants. In their weekly newsletter, they shared, "Everyone was sad to say goodbye on Friday to their friends and we all look forward to next year when we get to go to camp again."

Province VIII Youth Event: Keep our youth in your prayers

In just a few days, over 150 youth and chaperones from Province VIII will be arriving on O'ahu where the Diocese of Hawai'i will be hosting delegations from 12 dioceses, including 15 pilgrims from our diocese! The Provincial Youth Event (PYE) will be held July 28 - 31, on the grounds of "The Square" (The Cathedral of St. Andrew, St. Paul's, St. Andrew's Schools, and St. Peter's).

Pictured are 157 lei made by Holy Apostles Ribbon Lei Kahuna, that will go to each of the participants. Organizers are deeply grateful to all our supporters and volunteers. Wallace Authors August Devotionals

The Rev. Peter Wallace of St. Timothy's in 'Aiea, is the author of the August devotionals in the newest issue of Forward Day by Day. Did you know? Wallace is the author or editor of a dozen books, including A Generous Beckoning published by Forward Movement. For 22 years, he was producer and host of the ecumenical Day1 radio and podcast ministry.

Forward Day by Day is a booklet of daily inspirational meditations reflecting on a specific Bible passage, chosen from the daily lectionary readings as listed in the Revised Common Lectionary or the Daily Office from the Episcopal Church’s Book of Common Prayer.

Growing in Grace's insight and wisdom will be switching to a monthly article beginning next month. Stay tuned for a library of previous articles coming soon to the diocesan website.

World Nature Conservation Day: July 28

World Nature Conservation Day is observed globally on July 28 to raise awareness about the critical need to protect Earth's natural resources, ecosystems, and biodiversity. It serves as an annual call to action to address environmental challenges like climate change, pollution, and habitat destruction. While this year's date falls in the middle of the week, consider joining a group for a beach clean up, plant native species, or volunteer with your local wildlife organizations. MAUI - Episcopal Relief & Development Receives Verizon Grant via National VOAD to Invest in Maui’s Resilient Recovery

[July 13, 2026-ERD Press Release] Episcopal Relief & Development has received a Verizon Community Disaster Resilience Grant through National Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) to strengthen our long-term recovery program, in partnership with the Episcopal Diocese of Hawai’i, by supporting families in rebuilding safer, more fire-resilient homes.

After the devastating 2023 fires in Lāhainā and Kula displaced thousands and claimed over 100 lives, our local partners have focused on meeting immediate needs and supporting long-term recovery. Families are receiving temporary housing, social services and direct cash assistance to overcome barriers like under-insurance, contractor challenges and high construction costs. READ MORE
