Season of Pentecost: Proper 8

Almighty God, you have built your Church upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone: Grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit by their teaching, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE BISHOP'S CORNER

A Reflection on the Bishop Transition

“Where I am terrified by what I am for you, I am consoled by what I am with you. For I am a bishop for you, with you I am a Christian. The former is the name of an office assumed, the latter of grace; the former is a risk, the latter salvation.”

-St. Augustine of Hippo (354 – 430)

Sermo 340.1 (PL 38:1483)

My dear Siblings in Christ Jesus,

I am writing this on June 24th, the Feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, and the 40th anniversary of my ordination to the transitional diaconate in Christ Church Cathedral, Indianapolis. It is also a bit over a month since Libby was elected as the sixth Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Hawaiʻi. She has received the needed consents to her election from Bishops and Standing Committee. Her ordination to the episcopate is now set for November 14th. She is our Bishop-elect.

As a Diocese and as individuals, we are in a liminal time. The word originates from the Latin word limen, which means "threshold". During liminal time, you are suspended on the threshold of change. It is time marked by ambiguity, expectation, uncertainty, and transformation. It is time to look back and to look ahead. It is, I think, a normal time for Christians. We are always caught between the gift of Easter and the hope of the fulfillment of God. We live in the world, but also in the realm of God’s already and not yet. This is just especially such a time for the Diocese of Hawaiʻi.

As I look back to the election last month, Libby, Andrew, and Tim opened themselves to discernment and the movement of the Holy Spirit. One always enters such discernment imagining what the future will hold. Each was asked to describe a ministry and a future for a diocese about which they only had an inkling. It was a personally risky undertaking. I particularly recognize that Andrew and Tim offered their all. Part of living in a liminal time is allowing the “what if” of life to fade and to look ahead. I particularly appreciate that Andrew and Tim (and the other applicants and nominees, some of whom I know and many I do not) who risked themselves to walk with us as a diocese in discernment. Andrew is still a part of our ‘ohana and his naʻauao is still with us. Tim will always be woven into our story. We owe them our gratitude and love as we prepare for the future.

"Going Home" to St. Matthew's

On Sunday, June 21, 2026, the Bishop made his final Visitation to St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Waimanalo. The small close-knit congregation pulled out all the stops with a feast that could feed dozens more! In a post on his Facebook page, the Bishop shared, "Some Sunday visits are like going home. Bea and I are always with ‘ohana when with God’s people at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Waimanalo." I Mua Kākou: Moving Forward Together on Maui

On Saturday, June 13, 2026, folks were invited to attend a special gathering to discuss the future of Maui, and the role of The Episcopal Church in Lahaina. Called "I Mua Kākou" (moving foward together), the intent was to have a constructive heart-to-heart talk about the mission of the church in West Maui going forward.

"Our gathering, on June 13 was a success!" shared the Rev. Deacon Kalani Holokai, the Diocese's Community Relations Coordinator for Maui, who organized the event. "The Holy Spirit was invited and SHE was present! Folks from all four Maui Episcopal Churches were in attendance! It was obvious folks wanted to be there, and gratifying to have 100% attendance, and a few more."

This August will mark the three-year anniversary of the horrific fires that devastated Maui and destroyed the town of Lahaina. While recovery from a disaster of this magnitude has no timeline or precedence to follow, for victims and residents, it has been painfully slow.

KAUA'I: MUSIC IN THE AIR!

Summer is usually a time when church choirs take a break, but at Christ Memorial Episcopal Church on Kaua'i, there's lots of music still brewing in the air! They recently launched their new music ministry, Kīpuka Mele (Sanctuary of Music), for North Shore children and families. This outreach program is entirely free. During the Open House, kids had the opportunity to explore a range of instruments, have fun in the freshly furnished room, and sign up for upcoming opportunities. Mahalo to all those who helped plan and prepare the space over many months, and to the Sloggett Memorial Fund by All Saints' for the initial grant! Pictured above is the Rev. Katherine Amy Kropp with keiki exploring the instruments in a kid-friendly environment! (Photos and story from the Christ Memorial newsletter)
