This issue's header photo was taken this past weekend at St. John's Episcopal Church on Maui, where the Diocese's A Cup of Cold Water (ACCW) ministry blessed their new van. The original van was put into use back in 2014, over a decade ago! Pictured with Bishop Fitzpatrick and Maui clergy, the Rev. George Wong and the Rev. Twenty-third Sunday after Pentecost: Proper 28

Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE BISHOP'S CORNER

Continuing Festivities, Celebrations & Visitations...

During the past couple of weeks, the Bishop's busy schedule was highlighted with festive school gatherings and two very special church anniversary celebrations. Pictured above, the Bishop and staff members handed out goodies at St. Andrew's Schools' Halloween party, taking their cue from the timely and popular song, "I Sing a Song of the Saints of God" with (from left) Nani Carroll ("one was slain by a fierce wild beast"), Kaori Matsumoto ("one was a doctor"), Rae Costa ("one was a queen"), the Bishop ("one was a priest"), and Canon Sandy Graham ("one was a shepherd 'S' on the green")! The Bishop also shared the story of St. Francis and the wolf who terrorized the town of Gubbio, during the Upper School's Spirit Week, and at far right, reading to the kindergartenders. (Photos from the Bishop's and Cathedral's Facebook pages.)

On Kaua'i, All Saints' welcomed Bishop Bob and Bea to their year-long Centennial celebration wrap up event on Saturday, November 1, 2025, and his official Visitation the following day where he delivered a heartfelt and meaningful sermon as their search for a new Rector winds down. Pictured above left is the Bishop with Junior Warden Ron Morinishi, House Speaker Nadine Nakamura (who is a member and also presented a proclamation), and Senior Warden Faith Shiramizu. More photos and full story about their year-long event will be coming up in the next Chronicle. (Photos: Sybil Nishioka)

This past weekend, the Bishop spent time on Maui where he met with the Bishop's Committee of Trinity By-the-Sea (that includes Holy Innocents) to discuss Maui's ongoing recovery. Pictured above left are (seated) the Rev. Amy Crowe and the Rev. Deacon Kalani Holokai, (standing from left) Chuck Spence, Pam Silva, Scott Zipf, Joan Villa, Amy Krieger, Maggie Kottke, Katy Shroder, Chris Gale, Bishop Bob, and Diane Delos Reyes. The Bishop also blessed the new ACCW van (see header photo at top), and celebrated St. John's 125th anniversary as well as his official Visitation on Sunday. At center, he is pictured with Bella Hernandez from St. John's who remembered his promise to let her try on his "funny hat" the next time he visited. He is also pictured on the footsteps of St. John's before Sunday service. Standing in front with the Bishop is the Rev. George Wong, and on the stairs is visiting clergy the Rev. Andrew Walmisley, Senior Warden (Crucifer) Joseph Cascio, and the Rev. Hau'oli Tomoso. Photos and story of their anniversary event will be coming up in a future Chronicle. Hālau Waʻa Receives $15K Harvest Grant

By Jill Haworth

On October 29, 2025, the Executive Council of The Episcopal Church awarded a Harvest Grant of $15,000 to Hālau Waʻa Episcopal – Honouliuli, marking a pivotal step in the journey of this emerging worshiping community. This grant supports the congregation’s transition toward stability and sustainability, specifically through the development of the Hālau Waʻa Commons — a community center in Kapolei rooted in Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander values.

The vision for Hālau Waʻa Episcopal was first discerned at the New Episcopal Communities conference in Birmingham, Alabama in November 2019, and was built on a three-pronged foundation:

  1. Ministries: Creating small group ministries (waʻa) that bring church into the heart of community life.
  2. Worship: Gathering the waʻa on Sundays to worship at the intersection of Episcopal tradition and Hawaiian spiritual practices.
  3. Build: Designing and constructing a Commons to serve kūpuna, keiki, and ʻohana in Honouliuli.

Since its first worship service on Epiphany Sunday, January 11, 2020, under tents on the diocese's Kapolei property, Hālau Waʻa Episcopal has received three grants from The Episcopal Church’s New Episcopal Communities program. These grants have supported outreach to underrepresented and Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander communities.

Pictured above, the Rev. Mark Kekaileonui Haworth, Vicar, and members of Hālau Waʻa Episcopal, walked the land with prayers and mele before the geological survey work began on Monday, October 27, 2025. The Harvest Grant will fund a temporary worship space across from the Kapolei property, allowing the congregation to continue gathering while the Commons is under development. This space will serve as a bridge toward the realization of a vibrant gathering place where traditional knowledge and modern innovation meet. (Contributed photos)

O'ahu Island Youth Event at Pōkaʻī Bay

On Saturday, November 8, 2025, over a dozen youth met up at Pōkaʻī Bay on the Waianae coast of Oʻahu for an island youth event. The late afternoon/evening gathering was led by Camp Mokulēʻia staff Damian Martin, Rachel Martin, and Ivy Osburn, along with co-host, the Rev. Jazzy Bostock (Vicar of St. John the Baptist, Waianae) and the Rev. David "Kawika" Jackson (Diocesan Youth Ministry Coordinator).

The theme was "Kanaka Maoli Navigation Lessons" which not only looked at how the first Polynesian travelers sailed to the Hawaiian Islands, but also the spiritual and social lessons linked to Jesus' ministry with his disciples on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. The youth learned how Jesus came to be our "North Star" in life, living up to his nickname of "Emmanuel" as the God who is always with us through our life's journeys. They put together a Hawaiian compass made up of big jigsaw pieces, played water games with large stand-up paddle boards, and after dinner, concluded with a reflection led by Jackson with s'mores around a beachside campfire.

Big mahalos to the Camp staff and the adult volunteers from St. John the Baptist who grilled burgers and hotdogs, and provided other refreshments! (Contributed photos)

Clergy Transitions...

Aloha to the Rev. Giovan King

St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Kailua, bid the Rev. Giovan King, their Rector of 14 years, a fond aloha during her last service with them this past Sunday, November 9. She is pictured with lei and roses during a farewell party following the service. She is now officially on the Diocese's Supply Clergy list, available for all islands, at least for the next several months.

"For now, we will enjoy visiting all of our other Hawai'i churches," said Giovan. She and her husband Tom hope to relocate to Southern California in the spring. She adds, "Thank you to all for your best wishes, lei, gifts, etc.!"

Creative Peacemaking: A Timely Message from Episcopal Peace Fellowship

The Rev. Kerith Harding, former Rector of St. John's on Maui who now serves as the Executive Director of Episcopal Peace Fellowship (EPF), shared a timely message as EPF turned 86 on November 11. She invited every church and member to join her to "Pray, Study, and Act for Peace" during these especially turbulent times. Click HERE to read the issue of EPF's publication and her message.

Family of Hawai'i's First American Bishop Visits the Cathedral

In October, the family of the Right Rev. Henry Bond Restarick, the first American Bishop to serve in Hawai'i (1902-1920), visited the Cathedral of St. Andrew. They got to meet with Bishop Bob, and Canon Sandy Graham was on hand to take them on a tour. Mary Milliman, the great granddaughter of Bishop Restarick, sent a note to Canon Sandy expressing their delight and how their time at the Cathedral was the highlight of her trip. She shared this photo of the family on the steps of the Cathedral. Pictured from left: Carl Restarick Milliman (Great great grandson), Jennifer Milliman, Tim Usher with Laura Milliman Usher (Great great granddaughter), Mary Withington Milliman (Great grandaughter), Wendy Restarick Whithington (Great granddaughter) and David Paisner.

Strengthening Our Capacity: WCM's Foundational Goals for the Next Five Years

By the Rev. Canon Andrew J. Arakawa, Canon for Ministry Formation

I am grateful to the Iona Collaborative and our diocesan stakeholders for the productive three-hour, 360-degree review of the Waiolaihuiʻia Center for Ministry (WCM) on November 7, 2025, which provided a clear vision for WCM over the next five years.

A huge thank you to our stakeholders who helped set our goals, on which we will work. My listing of why they were invited to be a stakeholder is only a small mention of the many different roles each of them plays for their congregations, the diocese, and the wider community.

  • Dr. Joseph Eppink (St. Peter’s – participant in Insight Space and Licensed Lay Ministry Training through WCM)
  • The Rev. Keleawe Hee, PhD (Vicar, Good Samaritan, member of the Standing Committee, and graduate of WCM)
