This issue's header photo was taken at St. James' beach mass at Kawaihae Harbor, on Saturday, February 15, where couples lined up to renew their vows by Fr. David Stout. The expressions of love were timely for an extended Valentine's Day weekend. (Photo: St. James' Facebook page).

Last Sunday after the Epiphany

O God, who before the passion of your only begotten Son revealed his glory upon the holy mountain: Grant to us that we, beholding by faith the light of his countenance, may be strengthened to bear our cross, and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Our Clergy Pilgrims

While the word "pilgrimage" may invoke images of faraway foreign lands like Bethlehem and Nazareth, clergy in the Diocese found spiritual and holy places nearer to home for their pilgrimage. Several years ago, there were plans for a possible pilgrimage to the Holy Land, but with the escalation of war, unrest around the world, and rising costs, that idea was dropped. Instead, the Diocese's Clergy Pilgrimage took place on O'ahu, February 11-13, 2025, with a journey to several historical sites around the island.

Standing Committee Holds Listening Session on Kaua'i

The Diocese's Standing Committee conducted its second neighbor island Listening Session on Saturday, February 15, 2025, on the island of Kaua'i. These sessions are for Diocesan leadership to hear comments and concerns from folks in our churches, and to answer any questions they may have. The first Listening session was held on Maui last August, where folks affected by the fire had many questions and concerns.

The gathering on Kaua'i was held at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Lihue, and while the turnout was much less than anticipated, the conversation was engaging and informative for those in attendance. Topics discussed included the Bishop's retirement and the search process for his replacement; the challenges of shrinking membership, and attracting a younger demographic. There was also discussion about meaningful and innovative ways to worship that may not require a building. Going forward, the Rev. Catherine Amy Kropp of Christ Memorial (pictured below far left) suggested a hybrid meeting so that folks who were interested but could not make the drive out, could still join via Zoom. Standing Committee members were open and agreeable to that suggestion, and may also include specific topics of discussion.

The Standing Committee serves as the Bishop's Council of Advice and serves as the Ecclesiastical authority when there is no bishop. Pictured above, Standing Committee members from left: Doug Adams, the Rev. Andrew McMullen, Bill Bonnet, Chuck Spence (Committee President), Mary Carpenter and the Rev. Keleawe Hee. The Revs. Hau'oli Tomoso and Jazzy Bostock were unable to attend. (Photos: S. Nishioka)

Do you know where your trash goes after it leaves your home? It may be picked up by a garbage truck or you may need to bring it to your local transfer station. But then what? Itʻs good to know what happens with your ʻōpala so you can make wise decisions about how to reduce the amount going into your garbage and recycling bins. Click on the island links below to find out what happens to trash where you live. While some items can be recycled, a lot depends on whether there is a buyer for the recycled material. Many things can find a second life at a thrift store or by being donated to a reuse store like Reuse Hawai'i. The more we know, the better equipped we are to ask our government to develop better ways to handle waste more sustainably. Check out how other countries are innovatively handling waste: DENMARK, SINGAPORE
