Seventh Sunday after Pentecost: Proper 12

O God, the protector of all who trust in you, without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy: Increase and multiply upon us your mercy; that, with you as our ruler and guide, we may so pass through things temporal, that we lose not the things eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE BISHOP'S CORNER

Editor's note: As the Bishop prepares for vacation, he shares this letter with important reminders for all in the Diocese. Please read and share with members of your church:

Reminders from the Bishop to the Diocese

Bea and I are preparing to fly out on the 1st of August to see our grandchildren (and, I guess, their parents as well) in Germany. The Army recently transferred my son from Vicenza to Stuttgart. We’ll be home the week of August 19.

I promised to drop the Diocese a note to remind God’s people to sign up for our Diocesan Education Day on Friday, October 24, and the Annual Meeting of Diocesan Convention on Saturday, October 25.

This year’s Convention theme comes from a collaborative effort involving three Diocesan ministries: Kahuaola (formerly the Creation Care and Environmental Justice Task Force), the Hō‘imi Pono Racial Reconciliation Task Force, and the Native Hawaiian Ministry Committee. The team was awarded a Creation Care Grant from The Episcopal Church and named their year-long project Huli, which means to turn, to change.

Everyone in the Diocese is invited and truly welcome! Education Day will be implementing the final phase of the Diocese’s year-long HULI project and living into its theme. Folk will be able to take part in “hands-on” volunteer work at different sites, carefully selected for its meaningful work to mālama ʻāina. Folk can also choose to stay at ‘Iolani School and take part in several activities throughout the day.

Meeting & Celebrating with Folks on the Valley Isle

Earlier in the month, the Bishop made a visit to Maui that included meeting with leadership from Trinity By-the-Sea and Holy Innocents (above) as part of the transitioning process created by the Maui fires in 2023. From the Bishop's Facebook page he says: "I gathered with the Bishop’s Committee of Trinity by-the-Sea, Kīhei, and leaders of Holy Innocents/West Maui worship site to discuss the ongoing slow recovery efforts from the Lāhainā fire and continuing hope for the future. They share in congregational governance as one Mission with two sites (Lāhainā and Kīhei). Fr. Hau’oli Tomoso, the current Vicar, will be retiring at the end of August. Mtr. Amy Crowe will then become Vicar. She previously served as Vicar of Holy Innocents." Pictured below on Sunday, the Bishop led the service at Holy Innocents' temporary worship site in Napili. (Photos contributed by Chuck Spence and Katy Shroder)

Search Committee Distributes Church Questionnaire

On July 14, 2025, the Search Committee sent a letter to clergy, wardens, and church administrators about communication pathways available during this information-gathering stage of the Bishop Search and Transition Process. This included a questionnaire each church has been asked to complete. Please click HERE to see the letter and questionnaire. You can also access it by visiting the Diocesan website’s Bishop Transition page

You may notice a new letterhead/logo used on Bishop Search and Transitions Committee communications. This was created to highlight events and announcements produced by the committees. The flower graphic on the left is comprised of a yellow hibiscus, bougainvillea, and plumeria, which are the official flowers of Hawai‘i, Guam, and Saipan, respectively. The Bishop’s mitre is on the right.

Wisdom, Wonder, and Following the Way of Jesus

By The Rev. Canon Andrew Arakawa

One of my hopes for our diocese is that we can continue to nurture a culture that embraces lifelong learning. The Greek word for “disciple” is mathetes, which means “learner.” At its core, discipleship is not a one-time decision, but a lifelong journey of growth, reflection, and formation.

To walk this path of ongoing learning is to step into a mindset that practical theologian Kristina Lizardy-Hajbi calls the habitus of curiosity. This mindset is a way of being that values questions over answers and wonder over certainty. It asks us to lead not from the need to be right, but from the desire to be faithful. This kind of curiosity makes room for new insights, for diverse voices, and for an awareness of the surprising ways the Holy Spirit moves in our lives. READ MORE

Love God, Love God's World - Did you know that the Episcopal Church has developed a nine week film-based adult formation curriculum on Creation Care? The program welcomes people at all levels of engagement with environmental ministry, and provides a small-group learning experience that can transform how we relate to the natural world around us. TEC hopes that those engaging with the curriculum become:

  • Comfortable speaking about their faith, care of creation, and climate change
  • Personally transformed and invited into different levels of personal and collective engagement on creation care and eco-justice
  • Confident about where to find creation care resources and information

To review the curriculum visit "Love God, Love Godʻs World" on the Episcopal Church's website HERE.

O'AHU: Supporting the BacPac Project

Churches around O'ahu have been actively supporting the Diocesan Prison Ministry's BacPac project that began over a decade ago, providing essential items for newly released inmates from the island's correctional facilities. Pictured here are filled backpacks at Holy Nativity (above) and St. Timothy's (below) that were recently blessed before being given to the Revs. Kaleo Patterson and Haaheo Guanson. They deliver them to grateful folks upon their release. For a list of suggested items to pack, visit the Prison Ministry webpage HERE. (Photos from church e-news and social media)

Letter from Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe on crisis in Gaza

[July 17,2025] Yesterday, Archbishop Hosam Naoum of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem and the Middle East gave a powerful address to the Church of England’s annual Synod in York about the situation in Gaza and the Holy Land. He spoke of the horrifying humanitarian conditions that the war in Gaza has created, including the continued bombing of hospitals, a desperate lack of medical supplies, and a food distribution system that he likened to the dystopian novel “The Hunger Games.” READ MORE
