Gia-lynn Pacheco, a member of the Episcopal Church on West Kauaʻi (ECWK), was seriously injured in a swimming accident.
Recently Gia, age 12, suffered a serious neck injury. Gia is in intensive care and is being treated at Kapi’olani Medical Center on O'ahu. Gia has a bruised spinal cord and suffered broken vertebrae in her neck. She will require spine injury care and therapy and is likely to have lengthy rehabilitation. Gia has been supported spiritually by visits from her Vicar, the Rev. Kerry Holder Joffrion, and by Oʻahu clergy.
Our hearts go out to the Pacheco family for God’s strength at this time. Please keep her family in your daily prayers: Terry and Brandon, parents, and Mana and Quinton Pacheco, brothers. Gia’s recovery will take time and there will be medical and lodging expenses for her family. Please help by supporting her family financially.
Financial gifts of support may be given directly to the family at: Brandon Pacheco, PO BOX 690105, Makaweli, HI 96769; or via GoFundMe Support Gia's Journey to Healing and Mobility
A ‘Meal Train’ was created for homemade and gifted meals to be lovingly brought to the family at Kapiolani. Here is the link with complete information: Meal Train® for Brandon and Terry Pacheco
Please see the Hawaii News Now segment: Kauai girl partially paralyzed, family asks for help after swimming accident
Heavenly Father, watch with us over your child Gia-lynn, and grant that she may be restored to that perfect health which it is yours alone to give; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Right Reverend Robert L. Fitzpatrick

Kaua'i Island Youth Day
By the Rev. Kawika Jackson, Diocesan Coordinator for Youth Ministry
We had 17 youth join in the Kauaʻi Island Youth Day on the west side of Kauaʻi. It was led by Damian, Rachel, and Ethan of the Camp Mokulēʻia staff and myself, (Kahu Kawika Jackson), with Kahu Kerry Holder-Joffrion and her husband Peter Joffrion hosting us. Kahu Kerry and Peter also provided us with delicious sandwiches during the day and kebabs with roasted potatoes for dinner that evening.
We all did a survival hike, at which we had stations along the way to link kānaka maoli survival skills to spiritual values. The day was also in honor of teenager Gia Pacheco, who was going to take part in the day-event but had a serious accident earlier in the week, necessitating her hospitalization. We all prayed together for healing for Gia and dedicated the day to her. Kahu Kerry gave each one of us a sacred stone to place on the hike along the trail where we each felt the Spirit prompting.
It was a wonderful day of working together, supporting one another, worshiping Ke Akua in nature, and living into our kānaka maoli values of ALOHA: Amo (carrying each other's burdens), La'i (concern for peace and justice in the world), Ō (affirming life and daring to "step out" into life), Hili (mutual interconnectedness), and Alu (bridging over human divisions). Wrestling Toward Grace: Building Community Through Sacred Conversations
By the Rev. Canon Andrew J. Arakawa, Canon for Ministry Formation
| | |
One of my favorite Bible stories is the Hebrew Bible lesson for the lectionary this past Sunday. It’s the story of Jacob wrestling all night long with a stranger (who turns out to be an angel of God) in the Book of Genesis (Gn 32:22-31). At the end of the night, I love that Jacob’s name gets changed to Israel, which can be translated to mean, “one who struggles with God.” From Jacob’s new name, Israel becomes a nation, and the Israelites become a people (people who struggle with God). The same people who are the forebearers of our Christian faith tradition.
It’s important for us to remember the above aspect of our religious heritage, especially as Episcopalians, where our denomination is undergirded by Richard Hooker’s three-legged stool (Scripture, Tradition, Reason). We are called to wrestle and struggle with the ineffable mystery of God and seek out hard truths and deep questions, rather than settle for easy answers. Rabbinic Judaism has a dialogical practice of machloket l’shem shamayim, or “disputes for the sake of Heaven,” which are respectful, sincere debates aimed at uncovering divine truth rather than winning an argument. These debates reflect a belief that truth can emerge through multiple perspectives, and that disagreement, when done thoughtfully, is a sacred act of study and devotion.

SPECIAL LET'S GO FEATURE: The Philippines, Part 2
In this issue, we share Part 2 of Canon Sandy Graham's special trip to the Philippines with a contingent from the Diocese this past summer. This is his description of the video:
| |
Come with our contingent to visit the Philippines! There is a full Concordat relationship between The Episcopal Church, the Philippine Independent Church (IFI), and the Philippine Episcopal Church (PEC). The Diocese of Hawai‘i has a relationship with the Episcopal Diocese of Northern Luzon (EDNL) and the IFI Diocese of Batac, both in the northern area of the Philippines (historically, Filipinos in Hawai‘i came from the Ilocos Norte region). In this video we travel from Balbalasang down to Batac, attend the Festival of Faith and Witness (with lots of dancing and other cultural programming), visit various IFI congregations and other sites, and visit the Aglipay Central Theological Seminary (ACTS). Click HERE to watch it on YouTube now! and enjoy!
