FEATURE STORY

Returning to the Mountain: Celebrating 50 Years of EfM at Sewanee

By The Rev. Christopher Golding, EfM Coordinator, Diocese of Hawai'i

In June 2025, I had the privilege of traveling to the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Education for Ministry (EfM). It was a time of joy, gratitude, and deep reflection—a gathering that honored the past, embraced the present, and looked with hope toward the future.

EfM, founded in 1975 through the vision of the Reverend Dr. Charles L. Winters, has spent five decades equipping lay people to engage scripture, theology, church history, and ethical reflection with both heart and intellect. For many of us, EfM has been more than a program; it has been a formative experience that reshaped how we understand ministry in daily life. READ FULL ARTICLE

Aloha from your Search Committee,

Some of our congregants and clergy have questions regarding how to nominate or put forth the name of a person that they feel would be an excellent candidate for bishop of our diocese. The search committee welcomes your nominations for qualified candidates to be considered for the position of bishop. Therefore, if you think of a good candidate, please reach out and encourage them to discern if this is a calling they feel, so they can file an application. The Search Committee will be accepting applications from persons who have been nominated by others and feel led to answer the call, and those who are called and nominate themselves.

In early November, our Diocesan Profile will be posted across the entire Episcopal Church where any clergy discerning a call to be a bishop will be able to view it. If an individual discerns they may be called to serve as the bishop of our diocese, they can then fill out the application form included with the profile and submit. Applications will be due in early December.

Stepping Out in Faith, Not Fear

By The Rev. Canon Andrew J. Arakawa, Canon for Ministry Formation

For most of this summer, I have been wrestling with Thomas Hobbes’ stark description of the human condition from his book, The Leviathan, published in 1651, which describes life as “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.” His words reflect a view of humanity driven by fear, scarcity, and a survival instinct. We observe these dynamics unfolding in the daily news, in our communities, and within ourselves, which can lead us to feeling either isolated or succumbing to sectarianism. My contemplation on Hobbes led me to wonder how much of my personal and professional life is motivated by self-interest, and how much of our institutional life is driven by self-preservation. And yet, as people of faith, we cannot stop there. We must ask: how do we, as followers of the Way, live differently? How do we step out in faith, and not in fear, so that we can be un-siloed? O'AHU: The Next Chapter for St. Elizabeth's - Looking Back, Moving Forward

Pictured is a photo from the August 2005 Hawaiian Church Chronicle that shows members of St. Elizabeth's cutting off the bolt that held the front gate to the church closed for years. At the time, the church's large double doors were also always locked. (Photo: Kit Hawkins)

When the Rev. Jodene Hawkins arrived in September of 2004 as their new Rector, she set about transforming the church into a welcoming and vibrant community. Not only did those doors remain open, grants and donations were secured to convert a garage into a learning center for the inner-city children and teens. That was just the start of a new beginning for St. Elizabeth's.

Today, St. Elizabeth's has one of the most diverse congregations in the diocese, serving generations of families and welcoming the newest immigrant populations who call this area of Honolulu home. Likewise, the congregation continues to have ministries that serve and support many in the neighborshood.

Earlier this month, the Bishop appointed the Rev. Canon Sandy Graham as the priest-in-charge of St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church. He will continue to serve as Canon to the Bishop. Many will remember that Bishop Fitzpatrick served as the Vicar of St. Barnabas, Kapolei, and then of St. Luke’s, Honolulu, during his time as Bishop Chang’s Canon. During important transitions the Bishop can ask the Canon to extend ministry for a time in support of a congregation. Sandy’s role at St. Elizabeth’s is an extension of his ministry as the Canon to the Bishop. During this time, he will be working double-duty, still performing as the Canon to the Bishop while also serving as St. Elizabeth's priest-in-charge, as the mission of the congregation continues and a course for the future with a resident priest is charted.

St. Elizabeth's is in good hands as they "open new doors" and embrace a loving vision for their future.
