May Day is Lei Day in Hawai'i... and the generations of keiki who have grown up with this song, know that no where else celebrates it like we do in Hawai'i. This header photo was taken during Holy Nativity School's May Day program on Friday, May 2. Because St. Andrew's Schools' May Day celebration is not until tomorrow, we will wait for the next issue to share sweet photos from all of our schools! Fourth Sunday of Easter
O God, whose Son Jesus is the good shepherd of your people: Grant that when we hear his voice we may know him who calls us each by name, and follow where he leads; who, with you and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

April Visitations & Celebrations...
Despite a busy April with Holy Week and Easter, the Bishop managed to fit in two Visitations and a Celebration of New Ministry on Maui. Below at left, Ava was confirmed at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Honolulu, flanked by the Bishop and the Rev. Paul Lillie. Then on Maui, the Bishop spent time with a vibrant Good Shepherd congregation and the Rev. Moki Hino. (Photos from the Facebook pages of St. Mark's and Good Shpeherd)

Bishop Search & Transition Underway:
New Webage Created on the Search and Transition Process and Progress
By Chuck Spence, President, Standing Committee
Bishop Robert L. Fitzpatrick has officially announced his plan for resignation from the Episcopal Diocese of Hawai'i, citing "advanced age." His departure marks the beginning of an 18-month process leading to the consecration and ordination of the Sixth Bishop of the Diocese of Hawai'i on November 14, 2026.
| |
The Standing Committee is overseeing the transition and has established both a Search Committee and a Transitions Committee to manage different aspects of the process. A diocesan-wide virtual town hall meeting was held on May 3, where the plan for the next 18 months was presented and discussed in detail. All of the pertinent documents and recording of the town hall are now available for viewing, including a timeline.
To keep the community informed, a new webpage has been created on the Diocesan website, compiling all publications and recordings related to the transition. You can view it HERE or click on the button on the home page of the website.. This page also includes a link to a contact form allowing individuals to ask questions or provide comments to the Standing, Search, and Transitions Committees. Be sure to bookmark it and check back for updates as the process unfolds!
Beginning with this issue of the Hawaiian Church Chronicle, a new Bishop Search & Transition section will appear with the latest news and announcements.

Clergy Transitions...
Aloha 'Oe, the Rev. Katlin McCallister
We bid a fond aloha to the Rev. Katlin McCallister who will be serving as the new Canon for Intergenerational Ministry in the Diocese of Arizona beginning on June 1, 2025.
Katlin has been with the Church of the Holy Apostles in Hilo since 2017, caring for her flock during some of the most tumultuous times our state, nation and world has faced, including volcanic eruptions, storms, a pandemic, and a nation divided. During this time, she has been an outstanding Diocesan leader involved in a number of committees and task forces. She will be deeply missed.
Katlin's last Sunday service at Holy Apostles will be on May 18, at 9:00 AM, followed by an Aloha Reception. A hui hou Katlin & Tessa!
| | | Waiolaihui'ia Center for Ministry Awarded Five-Year Locally Grown Leaders Grant | |
We are pleased to announce that the Waiolaihuiʻia Center for Ministry (WCM) has been awarded a Locally Grown Leaders grant from the Iona Collaborative. This grant totals $125,000 over five years and will support WCM’s mission to form culturally rooted, theologically grounded lay and ordained leaders for ministry across our diocese. (Click HERE to read the award announcement.)
The grant will fund the continued development of WCM’s cohort-based formation model and its contextualized curriculum—both designed specifically for the people and culture of Hawaiʻi. The program uplifts Kanaka ʻŌiwi and Local Hawaiʻi voices while also equipping leaders from outside Hawaiʻi with the tools and support necessary to serve with cultural humility and competency in our unique, multi-ethnic communities.
The Rev. Cn. Andrew Arakawa, Canon for Ministry Formation and Dean of the Waiolaihuiʻia Center for Ministry, the principal writer of the proposal, will oversee all programs funded through this grant. The hope is that WCM continues to grow and thrive as a vital resource for the Diocese’s long-term sustainability by training leaders who are embedded in their local communities and committed to lifelong service.
Arakawa said, “I was thrilled to receive the news that our program got funding and to receive these words from the Executive Director of the Iona Collaborative, Nandra Perry, ‘What Hawaii is dreaming for its school of local formation is the kind of vision the whole Church needs to celebrate, support, and propagate.’”
This grant affirms that cultural responsiveness is essential for a thriving Church in Hawaiʻi. We give thanks for the Iona Collaborative’s support and the continued growth of WCM as a place where, in the spirit of its name, the “gathering of the waters of life”—nourishes leaders, congregations, and our shared mission across the Diocese.

| | MAUI: Celebration of New Ministry at St. John's, Kula | | On Saturday, April 26, 2025, the folks at St. John's Episcopal Church in Kula finally celebrated their Rector's "new" ministry with them. The Rev. George Wong began his call with St. John's in September of 2022... YES, you read correctly! As is the case with most clergy arriving in the Diocese, the Bishop's busy calendar is booked well in advance, so their official celebrations are often delayed by many months, and in this case, years, caused in part with pandemic issues! Pictured above, Bishop Robert Fitzpatrick officiates the service, and below, celebrating with a lively reception. Musican and singer extraordinaire Mark Haworth (center photo) from Hālau Wa'a Episcopal, flew in to join in the celebration. (Photos from the St. John's Facebook page) | |
