Reducing DE&I Efforts Could Hurt Employee Engagement
HR Brew | Kristen Parisi | January 17, 2023

Reports signal that company DE&I programs are less of a priority today than they were in 2020. “DE&I is part of our brand! We care about belonging! We’re increasing our diversity initiatives!” said practically every employer over the last two-and-a-half years.
However, on the cusp of an economic downturn, it appears employers may be taking their eye off the diversity ball—and it could negatively affect employee engagement, according to the chief diversity officers who spoke to HR Brew.

Top Ten HR Trends for the 2023 Workplace
Forbes | Jeanne Meister | January 10, 2023

As we enter 2023, the future of work has become the now of work. Many of the changes which started during the pandemic were accelerated and have become permanent aspects of our working lives. Just as I have done in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022, here is my countdown of what you should include on your HR roadmap for 2023.

#1 Employee Well-Being Is a Human Imperative
Workplace stress is on the rise and companies are creating workplaces to be engines of well-being. Experiencing stress at work impacts the individual worker and the worker’s relationships with friends, family, and co-workers. The recent Surgeon General report on Mental Health and Well-being reports 81% of workers say they will be looking for workplaces that support mental health in the future.
From Genius to Digital Nomad: A Look at The Evolution of Creative Job Titles
The HR Digest | Anna Verasai | January 12, 2023

In today’s rapidly changing job market, companies are struggling to find the right words to describe new and emerging roles, leading to the invention of creative job titles. From “Growth Hacker” to “Data Scientist” and “Remote Worker,” these new titles are not only reflective of the shifting job market but also companies’ efforts to stay competitive and attract top talent.
Remember when the iPhone was first introduced and people were still figuring out how to operate a smartphone? Back then, when a phone broke, one would visit the Apple store’s Genius Counter where Apple product specialists would register the broken phone and charge exorbitant replacement fees, as a result of an unfortunate incident of dropping the phone in the toilet. Was anyone else taken aback by the job title “genius”? I have no doubt that those employees were adept at their jobs, but I highly doubt that replacing a phone screen qualifies one for membership in Mensa.
Things To Remember When Working in Corporate
The HR Digest | Jane Harper January 23, 2023

Working in a corporate environment is not easy, especially if you are new. Having a corporate life can be a good experience, but it also comes with a few pitfalls that you should be aware of if you’re new to the job market. There are many things to remember when working in a corporate environment, and they differ from person to person.
How Can HR Win the War of Budgets In 2023?
HR Zone | Pete Cooper
December 7, 2023

HR teams must be prepared to prove their mettle if they want to protect their budgets and ensure productivity in 2023. As economic conditions get tougher, businesses are feeling the impact on their bottom line – and, understandably, many are looking to make efficiencies. Their HR teams will, for right or for wrong, be worried that their budget could be the first on the firing line.
Federal Marijuana Convictions and Its Impact on Employers
MEC Sponsor Husch Blackwell | Kevin KoronkaLeslie Basque & Quinn Stigers | November 2, 2022

  • On October 6, 2022, President Biden issued a full pardon for all federal convictions for simple possession of marijuana, urged state governors to pardon state-level possession convictions, and encouraged rescheduling of marijuana under federal law.
  • The pardon only applies to simple marijuana possession convictions under federal law and the District of Columbia’s criminal code.
  • The pardon does not extend to any state marijuana offenses or any federal offenses other than simple possession.
  • Pardoned convictions will still appear on an individual’s record but will be accompanied by a certificate of pardon.
  • Pardons “forgive” the conviction and remove any restrictions on a person’s right to vote, hold office, or sit on a jury that may have been imposed by the conviction.
Six Questions to Help Hire Great Managers (And Avoid Jerks!)
Forbes | Christopher Littlefield | January 31, 2023

Use these six questions to help understand if a person will be a manager people love working for. Few things send great people running from an organization faster than a bad manager. Take Tracy, a leader I recently interviewed who had been working at a company for 15 years when a new manager was hired. “I thought I would never leave, but after six months of misery with my manager, I quit.” Research shows that leaders have a disproportional impact on employees' experiences at work, but finding good ones and filtering out bad ones can be challenging.
5 Ways to Make the Workplace More Inclusive
HRExchangeNetwork | Gail Manley | January 12, 2023

It seems like so long ago when we all packed up our desks and went home thinking we’d be working remotely for just a few days or weeks at most. Those weeks turned into months, and here we are nearly three years later. What I remember most about those early days was the discomfort many felt about this “new normal” working from a kitchen counter, corner of the bedroom, or for the lucky ones, a home office. The beauty of that time was that everyone was in the same boat – home.
How Can HR Address the Opioid Crisis?
HRExchangeNetwork | Francesca Di Meglio
January 3, 2023

Employers – and specifically the Human Resources leaders who support them – are seeking ways to address workers’ mental health and wellness, which includes the crisis of substance use disorder. The opioid crisis in the United States is widely covered in the news. While people want to address the issue, they often have no idea where to begin. Hans Morefield, CEO of CHESS Health, which is a digital health company that is addressing the addiction crisis by providing access to prevention, intervention, and recovery options, recently shared his thoughts for HR leaders with HR Exchange Network.
New Protections for Pregnant, Nursing Employees
MEC Sponsor Bukaty Companies | January 9, 2023

President Biden signed into law recently two new protections for pregnant employees that take effect this year. The first measure is the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA), which applies to employers with 15 or more employees. The PWFA extends protections to employees and applicants who have known limitations related to pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions, even if the condition doesn’t meet the ADA definition as a “qualified employee.” The ADA doesn’t consider pregnancy a covered disability, and the Pregnancy Discrimination Act doesn’t require a reasonable accommodation. The PWFA is meant to bridge the gaps in existing laws.

NOTES FROM NAN & SUE
LOVE

Valentine’s Day is known as the day of love. And while many people look forward to that day with their significant other, family or friends, we'd challenge you to think a little differently this year.

In January, Nan was lucky to check off a bucket list item when she flew to Vegas to see Lionel Richie in concert. I recognize Lionel is not everyone’s cup of tea but we both love Lionel and have since we were young listening to the Commodores (yes, we were young once).

Nan says, Lionel seems to be a wonderful soul who genuinely loves unconditionally. He talked for several minutes about the state of the world and all the sadness happening around us. He asked each of the audience to look around the crowd. He reminded them that were singing, dancing, and enjoying time together even though we didn’t know anyone. He pointed out that we are all different, we don’t know each other but we were all enjoying ourselves. He reminded us that we have the power to end this sadness. WE must choose to come together as one… One human race.

He ended his concert with We Are The World. A song that Lionel and Michael Jackson wrote 38 years ago but couldn’t be more relevant today.

If you haven’t heard of this song, please google and listen to the words. If you know the song, google it and listen to the words. Here's a snippet:

“There comes a when we heed a certain call, when the world must come together as one.
There are people dying, oh, and it's time to lend a hand to the greatest gift of all.
We can't go pretending day-by-day that someone, somewhere soon make a change.
We're all a part of God's great big family, and the truth, you know, love is all we need.

We are the world. We are the children.
We are the ones who make a brighter day, so let's start giving.
There's a choice we're making, we're saving our own lives.
It's true we'll make a better day, just you and me.
Oh, send them your heart, so they know that someone cares,
And their lives will be stronger and free…”

Our challenge to you on this Valentine’s Day is to do something kind for a total stranger. It doesn’t have to be huge. It could just be telling someone they have a beautiful smile. Or I really like your shoes. Or small talk in an elevator… Be kind. Smile at a stranger. Respect each other. We are all humans.

Happy Valentine’s Day, friend. We appreciate you, Nan, Sue & the team.
