SECURITY MINISTRY
We begin our awareness of severe weather season in April for Wisconsin. Based on data from the National Weather Service, Wisconsin averages twenty-three tornadoes per year. While spring and summer are the most active times for tornadoes, they can happen at any time throughout the year.
The State of Wisconsin is conducting a statewide tornado drill on Thursday April 20th, at 1:45 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. during Severe Weather Awareness Week April 17-21. Everyone is encouraged to take this time and practice going to their designated shelter location. The drill will not include a mock tornado warning. Some communities may still choose to test their outdoor warning sirens during the scheduled drill times. Alerts will be issued on NOAA Weather Radios during these times. Some TV/Radio stations may briefly cut into programming with the announcement.
WEATHER TERMS
TORNADO WATCH means conditions are right for a tornado to develop. You can continue with normal activities but continue to be aware of and monitor the weather.
TORNADO WARNING means radar or trained storm spotters have identified a tornado.
In the event of a tornado warning, take the following actions:
Ø Seek immediate shelter preferably in a basement or below ground evacuation location.
Ø In a multi-story building, seek shelter in an interior hallway or a lower floor.
Ø Basements and interior hallways or rooms on a lower floor offer good shelter.
Ø If you are surrounded by debris, be cautious as removing some of it can cause other debris or parts of the building to collapse. When it is not safe or possible to leave the area, remain there until help arrives.
Be Alert and Weather Aware!
Stay safe, and remember if you see something, say something!
