H.I.L.L. Message
This year at The Hill we have the largest PG class in the history of the school, including male and female lacrosse and hockey student athletes. The PG year provides the opportunity for students to focus solely on bettering themselves as students, athletes and leaders.  More and more coaches at the next level are recommending prospective recruits to attend the PG year at The Hill. There is an expectation that incoming Hill PG grads, as freshmen, will be able to earn starting roles on the field or the ice. In addition, there is now an assumption that they will also be able to handle the challenging workload and lifestyle of a collegiate student athlete, as previously demonstrated by our alums.

The Hill PG program was designed to be a unique platform providing challenging academics, a high level training and sports schedule, and a leadership program, in which participants learn and experience leadership skills from a personal standpoint in both sports and society.

One former student described his PG year in his 6 word memoir: "Experiences that will last a lifetime."
Quote of the Week

"To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe."

Life at the Hill and Upcoming Events.
Monday Assembly
Students are to meet in the gym at 8:40 for a Monday morning assembly. Students are to be prepared with their journals and a writing utensil.

Guidance Meetings
The Guidance Department is currently meeting with students to go through either their Independent Pathways Plans or their All About Me Plans. Students are always encouraged to book appointments at   [email protected]  to discuss plans, options, references, applications, etc.

Attendance
Being present and on-time are expectations at The Hill Academy. If a student-athlete is going to be away, the parent/guardian must call the school or email   [email protected].  Please note that the handbook clearly outlines our attendance policy, including steps that are taken when a student's attendance begins to affect their classroom experience. Please also note that  all  student athletes need a parent-guardian to call or email if they are leaving school premises early. An early dismissal is reflected in a student's attendance record and will be addressed if it is affecting the student's classroom experience.

Uniform
Please review the appropriate uniform for student-athletes of The Hill Academy. If a student is without proper uniform it is documented. Three or more infractions will result in a suspension. Control the controllables - come on time, prepared and dressed for the day.

Hill Lacrosse.

One of the points of emphasis heading into our spring season is developing a strong mental and physical fortitude that will hold up in a genuine way in the tougher moments of our season-when, not if they arise.

Our spring seasons are always defined by the moments where we pushed through and got to a level that we didn't think was possible. Those moments come in a lot of forms.  It could come from personal break through over a long stretch, or a point in a game where you surprise yourself with the depths of your effort. Or maybe we have forces working against us that no matter how relenting, we persist and overcome.

In our season, we hope to find a clearer sense of what we are made of. From a broad standpoint maybe it creates some reference points to draw in life where you can say-Yes, I know I can get through this because I have overcome struggle before.

In practice we have been testing our players in different ways. The conditioning is harder, the pace faster, but we also want to create a little mental chaos. Maybe it's a bad call, or adding an extra sprint when they thought they were finished. That adversity muscle can be trained and we want ours to be our difference. The reality, some things in the game are not going to make sense, but our job is to control what is right in front of our face.

The topic of confidence came up recently and it was explained to me in a great way. Let's pivot away from using the word confident and instead use "self efficacy."  Self efficacy is having a strong sense of self "knowing" what you are capable of rather than "hoping".  Let's collectively work towards self efficacy.

Varsity Hockey
This past Tuesday and Wednesday 8 members of the Hill hockey program got the opportunity to skate with Team Canada's women's national team as they ran a mini training camp here at the Hill. Lorenzo Bonaiuto, Michael Buchinger, Matthew Poitras and Nicholas Messina from the varsity program joined Ricards Landmanis, Cory Liu, James Johnston and Gino Colangelo from the prep program in the opportunity. This group was selected by the coaching staff due to their hard work throughout the season both on and off the ice. They did an excellent job representing to Hill and all really enjoyed the opportunity to skate with some of the best hockey players in the world.

Hill Performance.

We're into the final stretch going into the season for our lacrosse athletes. There are only a handful of opportunities at this point to prepare. Whether on the field or in the gym, it's important as ever to maximize what is being done with the time left before the season. In contrast, our hockey athletes are beginning the transition into their offseason, and for many of you, it is an important offseason, trying to take the next step in the sport. While others may shut it down, we stick with the process. These next few months provide a window of opportunity to get a jump on your competition and put yourself in the best position for success.

Coach Noble led this weeks journal activity talking about mindset and perspective. He used Roger Bannister as an example. Bannister is famous for running the first ever 4 minute mile, a feat that was once thought impossible. When he broke this record, the record was again broken 21 days later. The point being, Bannister set a new standard and drove the rest of the pack to get to a next level of training and work. This is what we want to see from our athletes. Continuously exceeding expectations and setting a new standard for excellence.

This week the York Regional Police came in for an important talk with our students, highlighting some current issues and educating them on new laws and regulations that are highly relevant to them. Some topics included consent, appropriate use of social media, vaping, substance abuse and driving under the influence. Students were given reflection questions to be completed before the start of March Break. These questions will be marked based on completion and will be considered as a portion of the students final culminating task for this semester.
