H.I.L.L. Message
Today is International Women's Day; an initiative to celebrate women's achievements and call out gender inequalities in order to develop a gender neutral world.

This is a great opportunity to recognize our female student-athletes and alumni. Even though the female student-athletes have always been a minority within the school, they are often commonly referred as the backbone of the school. They are a special group; leaders in the classroom, gym, field/ ice, consistently raising the bar for what it means to be a student- athlete.

Nike released a video today, "One Day We Won't Need This Day". There is still a long way to go in order to forge a gender neutral world, especially in the world of sport, but the Hill female student-athletes, past and present, provide a lot of hope and inspiration for what is to come.

OSSLT
Teachers at the Hill have created a Google Classroom for the Literacy Test.  On the Classroom you can find a bunch of resources that should help students prepare for the test.  The code for this classroom is:  gabklrn.  Please join the classroom to find test prep materials, and to ask Mr. Collins any teachers you may have.

Upcoming practice sessions for the Literacy Test will be scheduled as follows:

Tuesday, March 10th- Lacrosse Only Practice Session 2 during practice period (8:40 am)
Tuesday, March 24th- Final Practice Session during practice period  (8:40 am)

On the day of the practice test, students will be provided with helpful links/documents to help them be successful on the OSSLT. Here are some of those links, for parents that would like to do a little bit of reading regarding the OSSLT:

Hill Lacrosse.

As we approach the spring season, there are some things to keep in mind:

-Enjoy the moment. Be where your feet are. Time will go quickly, take in all the unique experiences. Remember, it's a privilege not a right!

-Focus on team success. This "pack" mentality will keep you grounded and help you to overcome the tough stretches of a season. How am I serving the team? It's a cool thing to be apart of a close team and something that is rare in life.

-Embrace Adversity. When tough stretches happen, understand that these are opportunities for growth.

-Talk to someone. If you are struggling in any way, reach out to a teammate or coach. Ultimately our number one priority is your health and happiness. We are here to challenge and support you through your journey at The Hill. Usually after a meeting, everyone leaves feeling better.

-Go for it. Have an aggressive mindset. Do not be afraid to make mistakes and when the game presents opportunities, attack! Be in a constant competitive pursuit. Pick 2-3 different things and do them well.

-Do not overthink playing time. Field lacrosse is a difficult to manage. Roster sizes are big and field time is hard to come by. Flow of the game can be a factor and possession time in particular. We put a lot of thought and discussion into these decisions.

What can help playing time:

-Day to day commitment to the team:
Do you come to work everyday with intention and hunger to improve and get better?

-Overall standing at the school. Are you committed to your academics?

-Physical condition? Are you in the top 1/3 in overall conditioning? If not, it's going to be tough to see significant time in key moments.

-Impact. Are you ready for the level of play? If we put you on the field are you able to not just survive the play, but make positive plays?

-Do you know the systems inside and out? This will help you play with a free mind. If you don't know the systems, you will disrupt team continuity.

There is obviously a lot more that goes into it and as we like to say, "everything matters".  Playing time ultimately comes down to trust. Can coaches trust they can put you on the field to advance to team forward.

If you play the long game, it will always work out!

**Parents: We have been fortunate to work with amazing/supportive parents. We know that it can be hard sometimes when the game is not going well for your daughter or son. Give your daughter or son credit, they are capable of a lot, they can dig in and work through more than you may think. Help them discover how to earn things that are hard in life. Competition can help you push to levels you may not thought were possible.

We welcome discussions if something is really bothering you. That said, I would always wait at least 24-48 hours after a game before inquiring with a coach. Please avoid those interactions around the field or in the hotel. As you can imagine, there is a lot for our coaches to manage and I just want them focused on doing their job. We want to continue to attract and retain great coaches. Negative parent interaction can really weigh on a coach.

We are all in this together and we are excited for a great spring!

***Players:  How would you react if you are not receiving the playing time that you think you deserve?

Varsity Hockey
As we head into the March break we see a number of our students continuing to compete for their respective club championships. We want to wish our grade 10 students the best of luck as they compete in the OHL Cup tournament over the 2nd week of march break in their final minor hockey tournament of the season. For our students whose teams have finished their seasons we hope march break will be a time to relax and reset. It is always nice to take a step back at the end of your season and get away from the game. It gives you time to reflect on the ups and downs of your season, as well as allowing you to heal up any wear and tear on your body. This will help set you to have success the final two months of the school year to get the most out of your training at the Hill.

Varsity Hockey goes to OHL Game Thursday
This past Thursday our varsity hockey students attended the Mississauga Steelheads vs Saginaw Spirit OHL game. It was a great opportunity for our Hill students to observe hockey at the next level first hand, as well as get to watch Hill Alumni Thomas Harley (Mississauga), Cole Perfetti and Tristan Lennox (Saginaw) battle it out. The students enjoyed the game and our staff was really impressed with how we represented the Hill.

Hill Performance.

As we enter the final three days before spring break, we encourage our athletes to finish strong. Rather than take these next few days to coast, use it as an opportunity to continue to bridge the gap. Lacrosse athletes will continue with their sport preparation phase, while hockey continues to transition into offseason training.

A reminder for all athletes to complete their York Regional Police reflection piece by March 11th. These will be marked on a completion basis and will be considered when determining your overall mark in participation. Also, ensure you are staying compliant with weekly surveys as well as self-assessment of learning skills. First instalments of your culminating assignment will be given immediately after the break.

In this week's journal session students were shown a short video by Jon Gordon. The video encouraged students to start caring more about their pursuits, cut out the distractions and put forward their best effort in order to reach their goals.
