The Hoofbeat: August 2019
Pegasus fundraiser is now online!
This year instead of the Pegasus Luncheon at the Coral Casino, we've partnered with NIGHTOUT to create an online Pegasus Drive. There are several ways to show your support, including:

  • Honoring the late Jean Schuyler: long-time rider at Hearts and Santa Barbara philanthropist
  • Supporting our veterans program, HorsePower for Heroes
  • Contributing to our scholarship fund to support our low- to moderate-income participants
  • Supporting our Equine Facilitated Learning for at-risk youth, HorsePower
  • Sponsoring one of our amazing therapy horses
For your convenience, we can also accept cash or check gifts. Please make checks payable Hearts Therapeutic Equestrian Center and mail to PO Box 30662, Santa Barbara, CA 93130.

For questions contact Morgan at (805) 364-5202 or email  Morgan@heartsriding.org .

Thank you in advance for your continued support of our life-changing programs!
Honoring the Late Jean Schuyler
Jean Schuyler passed away on April 17th of this year. She was a young 92 years of age.
We had the extreme pleasure of being able to call Jean a “Hearts Rider”.

Jean rode on Tuesdays at noon with our Program Director, Susan Weber. Honey, our seasoned Quarter Horse mare, was her mount. Jean, with the help of a leader and two side walkers, would ride for about 30 minutes, both in the arena and on the trails. Despite needing support, Jean could still find her modified two point position, and she never missed an opportunity to remind you who was in control!

Jean rode until a week before she went into hospice. She was the definition of a true horsewoman. We will miss her immensely.
Volunteers Change Lives

Interested in joining our volunteer team? Contact our volunteer program manager, Sarah for more information.

We are currently looking for volunteers for upcoming Fall sessions. This is a great opportunity to spend time outdoors with Hearts horses and community members. Volunteers assist participants in mounted and unmounted lessons on the picturesque Hearts Ranch in Santa Barbara. No equestrian experience is required to join the Hearts team.

Training session dates:

New Volunteer Training 9/21 from 12:30-2:30 PM

Contact Sarah to RSVP for the training.
Sponsor a Hearts Horse
Kodi

DOB: 2003
Color: Red Roan
Breed: Quarter Horse
Height: 15’
Weight: 1000lbs.

Kodi worked as a solid trail horse for Los Padres Outfitters in his former career. To this day he would still prefer a trail ride to arena work! Because of his strength, he provides safe and secure lessons to our larger riders who aren’t appropriate for our taller horses.

Pictured here is rider Oscar and Kodi. Oscar is visually impaired and relies on Kodi greatly during lessons. Kodi is incredibly dependable and is often referred to as our trusty 4x4 truck. He’s solid, confident, and comfortable to ride. One of our instructors says Kodi is a true democrat – he wants to have his vote! This quality certainly comes in handy when working with riders like Oscar, who depend on Kodi’s knowledge and skill to have a safe and fun ride.

Lucy

DOB: 2009
Color: Palomino
Breed: Quarter Horse
Height: 15’
Weight: 1050lbs.

If you looked up “mare” in the dictionary, there would be a photo of Lucy! She is expressive and great at giving feedback to our EFL (Equine Facilitated Learning) clients. She is the youngest of all of our horses, and she has the energy to prove it! She is very bright and responsive to the aids of her riders.

Pictured above is rider Julian and Lucy, his favorite horse. Julian lovingly refers to Lucy as “Goldie” – an appropriate nickname given her gorgeous gold coloring! Julian loves to ride Lucy and has progressed immensely as a young rider with her help. Lucy is gentle and responsive to Julian and her other riders, and has shown a great interest in our unmounted classes, too. Lucy is a gifted horse and reminds everyone around her that blondes indeed have more fun!
