The Hoofbeat: May 2020
Hearts to Begin Re-Opening on June 1
The staff at Hearts has worked hard to put together a plan for resuming some of our programs. While we are anxious and excited to begin inviting participants back to the ranch, we must keep everyone's health and safety at the forefront of our planning. We will be following guidelines for social distancing, cleaning, and sanitizing set forth by Santa Barbara County.

We will be re-opening in phases . Our programs will be modified to allow for lower-risk operations, including lessons provided to independent riders in the therapeutic riding program and Equine Services for Heroes. Unfortunately, riders requiring additional support from leaders and sidewalkers cannot be kept safe according to the 6-foot social distancing measures. Our staff will continue to evaluate these circumstances so they can be safely accommodated in later phases.

Staff only will be responsible for all therapeutic riding programs. We hope to have our amazing volunteers return to assist in these programs soon. However, for this first phase of re-opening, staff only will be helping with grooming, tacking, and instruction. The instructor will sanitize every piece of tack after each use. We also require that participants purchase their own helmets. Our staff is evaluating our new policies and procedures daily and making any necessary adjustments to keep our participants safe and healthy.

We have missed our participants over these last few months. We wish we could open the gates and invite everyone back, but sadly this is not safe or possible. We appreciate everyone's patience and support during these transitions.

We are thrilled to be getting some of you back in the saddle, and can't wait for the time where we all can be back at Hearts. Our hearts will be whole again soon!

Vinnie and Pippa are at it again! Our Minis on the Move program is back in full force, and we are coming to YOUR house!

Since you cannot come to the horses, the horses will come to you! For a suggested donation of $40 or more (we'll happily accept larger amounts!), Hearts staff will bring the miniature horses, Vinnie and Pippa, to your home for a 30-minute visit. Staff accompanying the minis will follow the most current  Santa Barbara County COVID-19 Guidelines . We encourage you to do the same.

These outings continue Hearts' mission to use the power of the horse to promote health and wellness. Horses have the unique ability to comfort and connect with people. Social distancing, due to COVID-19, has left individuals feeling isolated, fearful, and anxious. The minis would love to bring you some sunshine and cheer!

Initially designed for our participants who cannot come to the ranch, we have decided to open this wonderfully uplifting program to the Santa Barbara community.

Some rules and guidelines for your visit:
  • Schedule your visit with Morgan: Morgan@heartsriding.org, (805) 364-5201
  • There is a suggested donation of $40 or more for each visit. Proceeds directly benefit the care of our horses and our programs.
  • Visits are for front yards or common spaces only.
  • Each visit will last no more than 30-minutes.
  • Hearts staff will be wearing masks and gloves.
  • Please do not encourage your friends to come to your home for these visits. We kindly ask that everyone remain in their yards while visiting with the horses. We will be practicing proper social distancing.
  • You can give Minis on the Move visits as a gift to others in need of cheering up. Call us for more info!
