Vol. 3, Issue 5 | January 2020
Message from the Superintendent
Dear HUSD Community,

Happy New Year! While we are only nearing the halfway point of the 2019-2020 school year, HUSD is already looking to 2020-21. We welcome the Class of 2033 as all of our elementary schools prepare for their kindergarten information meetings starting as early as today, January 13. Please visit the HUSD website or individual school websites for exact dates and times. Families will learn about the various programs available to them and their students when they join the HUSD community.

I am also pleased to share that just before the winter break, HUSD and the Hayward Education Association reached a tentative agreement to settle contract negotiations. Some highlights from the agreement are that HUSD will reduce the maximum class size from kindergarten through twelfth grade, eliminate K-1 combination classes, reduce class sizes in the World House newcomer program, increase EL Specialist support, seek to develop a multi-year school calendar, and increase staff salaries to recruit and retain highly qualified staff.

While the agreement must first be ratified by HEA members before being submitted to the school board for approval, we are pleased to begin 2020 having reached a tentative agreement that prioritizes the needs of our students. HUSD’s previous commitment to fiscal responsibility has allowed us to utilize available savings for this year towards the goals outlined in this tentative agreement and those our community has prioritized in our strategic plan. As we begin our budgeting process for the 2020-21 school year we will need to consider how to prioritize our expenses so that we maintain a balanced budget as we make these important changes to our students' learning conditions. Soon, you will learn about opportunities to become involved in these discussions through our Local Control and Accountability Plan engagement process. We look forward to your continued involvement in our decision-making processes.

Sincerely,
Matt Wayne, Ed.D.
Superintendent
